29 September/October 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN RETIREE CONTINUES TO ENJOY NATURE Jim Glazebrook credits his 42-year Davey career to developing a deep appreciation of nature and the outdoors during childhood, thanks to his father's love of trees and mother's green thumb. Glazebrook began his Davey career at the Indianapolis office as a landscaper during the "1974 Super Outbreak" that produced a record 148 tornadoes and affected 13 states, including Indiana, his home state. After a few years, he was promoted to junior sales arborist. Then in 1978, he transferred to the Detroit office. In 1982, Glazebrook moved to the Hinsdale office as a district manager before moving back to the former Northeast Chicago office in 1998 as a sales arborist until his retirement in 2017. During his career, Glazebrook made lasting connections with people like his mentor, Ken Celmer, retired senior vice president and general manager, Residential/Commercial services. He also met his wife, Teena Glazebrook, retired customer experience coordinator from the South Chicago office, during his time at Davey. "The biggest memories I have from Davey are with the people I worked with," Glazebrook said. "There was a great sense of camaraderie that helped create lifelong friendships." Glazebrook remembers more of the good times he had with Davey, rather than any of the bad. Being an employee owner has made him feel like a valued member of the Davey family. Although he was a Davey employee at the time of the original employee ownership initiative in 1979, he was unable to participate until a few years later. After he did, he felt like it made him a vital part of the company and he never looked back. Retirees! Have stories to share about retirement or your life at Davey? "The employees knew ownership was part of our destiny, right from the beginning," Glazebrook said. "We weren't going to let it fail." In retirement, Glazebrook and his wife reside in the suburbs of Illinois and enjoy traveling. Some of their trips have included visiting the historic cities of Italy and a train ride that went from the windy city of Chicago across the country to rainy Seattle. When they aren't traveling, the Glazebrooks enjoy visiting their four daughters and two sons, as well as their nine grandchildren who range in age from one to 22. Glazebrook still spends time working outside on his property, and he visits his Davey friends at the Southeast Chicago office whenever he gets the chance. "I've worked with a lot of great people, and I have a lot of fond memories," Glazebrook said. "Davey was a good fit for me, and I wish the best for everyone that works for Davey and hope they feel the same way I did about the company." ADVICE FROM JIM GLAZEBROOK: 1. Buying Davey stock can be more beneficial than participating in the stock market. 2. Do the best you can do and live by John Davey's adage, "Do it right, or not at all." 3. Get up every day with a great attitude and be thankful. 4. For fellow retirees, keep moving and "don't let moss grow under your feet."
