The Davey Tree Expert Company P.O. Box 5193 Kent, Ohio 44240-5193 FROM THE ARCHIVES John Davey's development of the idea of tree surgery earned him many accolades late in his life, but much of his well-earned recognition did not come until after his death in 1923. Various entities and organizations, including his name- sake company, honored "Father John" for his role in helping establish the tree care industry in the U.S. A few of the more notable kudos John Davey received over the course of the last 100 years include: John Davey engages in the practice of dendrochronology – the study of tree rings–in this undated photo from the Davey archives. The photo was recently donated to the company by members of the Davey family. 1924 – The book Fifty Famous Farmers published by The Macmillan Company of New York recognized John for his contributions to the field and explained his early research in developing the science of tree surgery. Davey is listed among other famous "farmers" including John Deere, J. Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day, and Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin. 1943 – The U.S. Navy christens the John Davey Liberty Ship, launched in November 1943 from a shipyard in Los Angeles. More than 2,700 liberty ships were built in the U.S. during WWII as a class of cargo ship used to transport troops and supplies in Europe. The liberty ship named for John Davey spent 49 days on the water and was scrapped in 1961. 1992 – The Davey Company introduces the John Davey Award of Excellence. The award was intended to recognize managers for perpetuating the Davey spirit as exemplified by the company's founder. The most recent John Davey Award recipients were Larry Abernathy, retired vice president, Davey Tree Surgery Company, and Karl Warnke, retired chairman, in 2018. 1998 – Entrepreneur Magazine published its "Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs," which named John Davey among America's 500 most influential business founders. The magazine profiled the lives and legacies of other entrepreneurs such as Burton Baskin and Irvine Robbins of Baskin-Robbins, Thomas Edison and William Fox of Twentieth Century Fox. 2004 – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources inducted John Davey into the Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame (HOF). The HOF was founded in 1966 to recognize individuals who lived a lifetime devoted to the preservation, protection and wise management of Ohio's natural resources. Other honorees include Ohioans Johnny Appleseed and botanist Lucy Braun, one of the first people to conduct research in the science of plant ecology. 2013 – The Paignton Zoo in South Devon, England, near John Davey's birthplace planted a Kentucky coffee tree in honor of Davey. That year, the zoo started a new project to evaluate its trees using i-Tree ® , which was developed by Davey in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, Casey Trees and other partners.
