8 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2023 MISSION STORMS HIT WASHINGTON A severe windstorm in western Washington state knocked out power to more than 250,000 customers in early November. Four Davey Tree Surgery Company Seattle City Light crews rotated 24/7 coverage for one week to help restore power. "It was one of the worst windstorms I've seen in the area in a long time. I live in downtown Everett, on a grid where we don't lose power during windstorms, but we lost power in this storm for three days," said Micah Fazio, supervisor, Seattle City Light account. "It was nice to see the crews respond the way they did. They worked extremely safely, in a manner not only to minimize risking further damage to the utility but also in accordance with company policy and state law." The Northwest and Southeast Seattle offi ces responded to calls in Snohomish and King counties. "We had a couple of crews dedicated to doing nothing but storm work for a solid week. Everyone stepped up," said Jason Maize, district manager, Northwest Seattle offi ce. Following the severe windstorm, an early December snowstorm caused power outages for around 43,000 people, according to Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD). Crews from the Northwest and Southeast Seattle offi ces, and the Seattle City Light account, assisted with recovery efforts. VISION PRESERVATION OF A CHAMPION TULIP POPLAR This county champion tulip poplar, pictured, is located on the grounds of Howard County Conservancy in Woodstock, Maryland. Champion trees are the biggest of their species. This tulip poplar measures 92-inches in diameter at breast height (DBH). The land just north of the tree is being developed into a residential lot. As part of an agreement with the conservancy, the developer worked with Lou Meyer, regional business developer, Davey Business Development Team, and board member of the Howard County Conservancy, to plan care for the tree. "Champion trees are extraordinary arboricultural ambas- sadors that give non-industry folks something to notice and hold on to, so their importance for public education is valued," Meyer said. "Being able to work on the preservation of such a beloved local tree celebrity is an absolute delight." Brian Leatherman, assistant district manager, Washington, D.C. offi ce, along with S&S technicians Jeremy Faoro and Wilson Yoingco, worked on the tree to prepare it for the nearby property development.
