Expert Company in Kent, Ohio,
in 1880.
But before he came to
America, John spent his
formative years studying
agriculture, horticulture,
and fl oriculture in his
native England.
One of the locations
he studied in prior to
emigrating to the U.S. in
1873 was in the English
borough of Torbay. It was
in Torbay, at the age of
21, where he entered
a six-year apprenticeship
to learn greenhouse
management, horticulture
and fl oriculture
practices to complement
