March/April 2017 | The Davey Bulletin 9 Thomas Weidner can add emergency medic to his Davey resumé after providing first-aid to a client during a visit to discuss a tree care estimate. Weidner, assistant district manager, Northeast Chicago R/C office, arrived to find the client, an 87-year-old woman, out in her barn bleeding from her arm. She had been trying to get her hedge trimmers down from a shelf when another tool fell and injured her. Weidner helped her get to the house, stopped the bleeding and called for an ambulance. Paramedics arrived and transported the client to the hospital, TREE DOCTOR MAKES HOUSE CALL, RESCUES RESIDENTIAL CLIENT Story idea submitted by Robert Meoak, district manager, Cincinnati R/C after which Weidner proceeded to clean up the blood on her utility room floor, put her tools away and lock up her barn. He called later to check and BOARD BULLETIN Thomas Weidner make sure she was doing OK. The incident happened while Weidner was working as a sales arborist in the Cincinnati R/C office. Robert Meoak, district manager, Cincinnati R/C office, said like all of Davey's sales arborists Weidner then worked a busy schedule traveling from one appointment to another all day. "Tom recognizes that in the midst of our busy days there is a lot of personal satisfaction that can come from pausing to help someone in need," Meoak said. Great job, Tom! In a world of negative reviews, rarely do people get recognized for going above and beyond their call of duty. Davey's Vanez Hardy, crew leader, Jacksonville Military Family Housing, Florida, was recognized for just that. One afternoon while mowing, he noticed resident Staff Sgt. Jonathon Walker of the U.S. Air Force looking frustrated in his yard. Instinctively, Hardy dropped what he was doing to help. Walker was trying to spell out a thoughtful anniversary message for his wife in his driveway using rose petals. Being that it was a windy day, the message kept blowing off the piece of paper the petals rested on. Hardy offered his assistance and helped hold down the petals and paper until the wind stopped gusting. "This community feels like home, so I felt like it was my job and my duty to help," Hardy said. To honor Hardy's willingness to help, Walker contacted the base's Community Housing Office to give him an award. A few days later, Hardy was honored with a plaque for his outstanding customer service. "Vanez's charismatic personality is only exceeded by his can-do capabilities," said Tom Freeman, Davey's southern regional manager. "It's these attributes that help Vanez inspire his crew and his clients everyday." KINDNESS COUNTS Vanez Hardy, foreman, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, receives an award for outstanding customer service.
