CLEARING THE WAY FOR ELECTRICITY
Eastern Utility services employees have spent the last
several months using specialized equipment to clear a new
easement for a 69kV transmission line in Morgan County,
Indiana, for Hoosier Energy.
In the first phase of the project, Eastern Utility services'
land clearing team and Hoosier Energy utility account
employees quickly removed and cleared hardwood trees
to create an over 6-mile, 100-foot-wide right-of-way corridor,
as well as over 16 off right-of-way access paths for future
construction crews to be able to gain access to set poles
for a new transmission line. The team was able to
complete the clearing by an April 1 deadline to adhere
to environmental requirements as to not disturb Indiana
Brown and Northern Long Eared Bats.
"It's very exciting for us to be able to provide this service,
as it's not something we've historically done in the past,"
Tanner Parker, operations manager, Lakes Region, Eastern
Utility services, said. "The demand for power is increasing,
and everybody shares a responsibility to enhance the
electric grid."
The project's team is expected to finish the second phase
of the project – cleaning up and processing all remaining
wood debris – by early summer. The new transmission
line will support two other existing lines and substations
to enhance the grid for future projects, as well as improve
the local power grid in the Northern Indiana area.
