DAVEY AROUND THE WORLD TREKKING MOUNT KILIMANJARO Inspired by a friend and fellow retired marine, Justin Orabona, project developer, Environmental Consulting services, Davey Resource Group, booked an 8-day, 7-night hiking trip with his son-in-law to summit Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. He spent 6 months training for the hike beforehand by hiking trails and using a high incline treadmill and Stairmaster, all while carrying the weight of a 30 lbs. backpack. Orabona was one of 8 hikers out of 14, who made it to the top of the highest free-standing mountain in the world. "I was surprised at what a great group of people we got to travel with, including the porters and guides that supported us," Orabona said. "It was a life-changing experience to share the beauty and difficulty of the hike with people from all over the world, who came together with the same goal." WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES When Tim Roberts, regional safety specialist, health and safety department, was looking for a place to visit for he and his wife's second wedding anniversary, he was directed to look towards Banff and Jasper National parks in Alberta, Canada. After seeing photos of the sites and hearing about the beauty of the area, Roberts and his wife decided to spend their weeklong vacation hiking and driving along the Canadian wilderness. "At every turn, there was a more amazing site than before, Roberts said. "It was just full of stunning mountains, glacier-fed lakes, and wildlife like mountain sheep, elk, and bears." We'll do our best to feature it in an upcoming Davey Around the World! Justin Orabona is holding The Davey Bulletin at the Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, 19,341 feet above sea level. Orabona and his tour hiked throughout the night, battling cold temperatures, roaring winds, and symptoms of hypoxia, or low levels of oxygen, to reach the top by sunrise. Tim Roberts is holding The Davey Bulletin with his wife, Sarah, during a stop at Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, while driving along the Icefields Parkway, a scenic, 144-mile-long highway that connects Banff to Jasper National Park.
