"The team it takes to make this project work and to really create the success that we've had extends from the newest apprentice to all of our office coordinators and managers," White said. "Without that team it wouldn't happen." CONNECTING REMOTE CANADIANS TO WIDER WORLD Employees from operations throughout the Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada, Limited, are working to facilitate installation of high-speed internet connections for Canadians in some of the most remote parts of the country. Employees from operations throughout Davey Canada are supporting Bell, Canada's largest communications company providing advanced internet, wireless, and other services, by clearing the way for installation of new, high-speed fiber optic internet infrastructure. Trevor White, account manager, said Davey Canada crews from Residential offices, Utility accounts, and even the Rail division have sent employees to support the work. "We are out there in remote locations dealing with cottages that are generations old with an original Bell telephone line running into it," White said. "Many older Canadians in rural areas rely on the internet for virtual doctor's appointments, to talk with family members, and to generally stay in con- tact. The service we're providing, Davey's kind of giving back in a way by bringing northern schools and houses up to date and giving them better access to the world." The work involves crews clearing areas around or beneath existing telecommunications poles so that new fiber optic lines can be installed by the client. Much of the work is done by crews traveling on foot with a variety of equipment. The terrain varies from lowland wetlands to beautiful, grassy highlands and rocky outcroppings with sharp elevation changes. Troy Boughner, assistant district manager, Toronto West Residential office, has worked on the Bell project mapping VISION Camouflaged telecommunications towers are used occasionally in Canada. Get to Know... TROY BOUGHNER When did you start at Davey and what is your current title and responsibilities? I am the assistant district manager of the Toronto West Residential office. I help with managing the shop, crews, sales; and everything from safety oversight to supplies, inventories, equipment, maintenance; and if crews need help, I usually go out into the field and help. What's one of your most memorable projects that you've been a part of? It's hard to say after almost 11 years with the company. There have been so many jobs it's hard to pick one. The Bell work is interesting. I've been able to go up north and work in remote, forest areas and spend more time outdoors. Who is someone at Davey who has had a significant impact on your career? Mike Gray, who is retired now. He definitely saw something in me and gave me a chance. Mike was my mentor. I was his assistant district manager. He was a big influence on my success in the company. What is your favorite music genre? Probably rock and roll. What is something you'd want to be famous for? I don't want to be famous. I'm humble. I would just want to be a good mentor, good leader, good teacher, good employee and a good arborist. Troy Boughner Assistant District Manager, Toronto West
