21 November/December 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN CLIENT PRESIDIO TRUST JOINS D.I.G.M. WEST TRAINING The Davey Institute of Grounds Management (D.I.G.M.) West training was held at Presidio Trust's Log Cabin. The Presidio, one of the most visited national parks and a former U.S. Army post, is located next to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Employees of Commercial Landscape Services' (CLS) San Francisco territory client Presidio Trust joined CLS employees for the four-day training. D.I.G.M. sessions included best practices for warm and cool season turf identification, soil and nutrition, management of water, turf, and pests, the diagnostic process, tree and shrub planting, ornamental tree and shrub identification, proper pruning, herbicides, pesticide storage and handling, proper mulching, plant and turf growth regulation, snow removal, wildfire training, property enhancement, and spray unit training. Blake Bushley, project manager, Denver Colorado Service Center (CSC) territory, enjoyed learning best practices for the Western U.S. climate, as he's originally from out East. "The water management courses were very insightful, as I have no prior experience in that field before this year. It was also great to meet some people from our team that I've only spoken to on conference calls. All in all, it was a great experience and I look forward to sending some of my team members to D.I.G.M. West in the future," Bushley said. With the San Francisco skyline as a backdrop, Presidio Trust employees are pictured with CLS D.I.G.M. West attendees Milo Archuleta, Blake Bushley, Jovoni Carbullido, Santos Carrillo, Joshua Fields, Tayler Goldtrap, Andy Holsclaw, Alexander Portillo Membreno, Alex Pryer, Mike Shippy, William Style and David Werner. Instructors included A.D. Ali, Andre Archuleta, Matt Delaney, Paul Kovacik, Daniel Morgan, Manny Nassar, Blane Pshigoda and Thomas Whitney. LEARNING SAFETY LEADERSHIP SKILLS AT D.I.U.V.M. The Davey Institute of Utility Vegetation Management (D.I.U.V.M.) West training session was held over four days at the Davey Tree Surgery Company's (Surgery Company) Livermore office in California. The training covered utility topics with a focus on leadership and safety. Zoe Jacobson, supervisor, Southern California Edison trimming account, said it was an awesome opportunity to take a step back from day-to-day tasks and routines. "We got to work on the business rather than in the business. The interactive sessions ranging from safety to leadership to tree science allowed us to connect and learn from each other's experiences, reinforce our individual growth as leaders, and visualize and recommit to the continued development of our local teams," Jacobson said. D.I.U.V.M. trainees were Nicholas Anderson, Sid Avila, Byron Bohnet, Jaime Buenrostro, Korie Butler, Colin Davis, Oscar Escarcega, Micah Fazio, Jose Herrera, Zoe Jacobson, Joel Maldonado, Eddie Rojas, Jesus Sanchez, Jose Soto, Jorge Villa, Patrick Wilson and Jorge Zapien (not all pictured). Instructors and management attendees included R.J. Laverne, Matt Krause, Kevin Peters, Michael Santos, Philip Gibbons, Bradley Gonzales, and Harold Danielson. D.I.U.V.M. West training topics: • safety leadership • emotional intelligence • Factors & Forces • wildfire mitigation • tree inspection post-wildfire • incident prevention • human performance • utility pruning • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) job site visits • informed safety culture
