10 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2021 9: NEEDHAM OFFICE DAWN REDWOOD The Needham office was involved with two Arbor Day events. The office donated and planted a dawn redwood tree on the grounds of Lowell Elementary School in Watertown, Massachusetts. Marbin Sanchez, Jon Quinn, and Steve Kendall participated in the planting. For the second event, the office spent a day volunteering with the Needham Department of Public Works and Davey client Eversource Energy cleaning up Riverside Park in Needham. The crew pruned ornamental river birch and maples, and pruned a large mulberry tree using a bucket truck. Jim Abusamra, Dean Milinazzo, Jim Palmer and Ben Sheard took part in the event. 10: NORTHERN VIRGINIA WEST OFFICE / COMMERCIAL TREE SERVICES / DRG The city of Falls Church, Virginia, celebrated 43 years of being a Tree City USA city in 2021. Davey recently took over the commercial tree care contract for the city under the Northern Virginia West office, and Davey Resource Group also completed a tree inventory for the city. In a virtual Arbor Day celebration video for city residents, John Jastrzembski, business developer, Commercial services, encouraged people to use the mobile TreeKeeper app to document tree care concerns in their community inventory and learn more about the urban canopy. 12: SOUTH CHICAGO OFFICE – SCHOOL NURSERY The South Chicago R/C office was involved with two Arbor Day events. Prospect Elementary School in Clarendon Hills asked the office in 2020 to install two, 10-seat outdoor classrooms for students using cut logs for seating. This year, the school asked to double the size of those areas to 20-seat spaces. This was possible due to COVID restrictions permitting larger class sizes outside. Chris Kingzette, district manager, said the office donated a 3-inch Marmo Freeman maple tree to provide shade to the area. Todd Czernik, Chris Kingzette, Leo Sotelo, Porfirio Torres and Avelino Vieyra moved all of the logs into place. In Oak Lawn, Illinois, the Oak Lawn-Hometown district 123 maintained a tree nursery at the middle school for many years. But recently the space became neglected. Bob Uzandenis, sales arborist, South Chicago office, is an alumnus of the school and his wife, Colleen, is a teacher in the district. For Arbor Day, the office donated 30 new native tree saplings in the nursery, and Uzandenis and Chris Kingzette, district manager, volunteered to install them. The office is also now contracted to provide ongoing maintenance to the nursery. 11: SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE Adam Jensen, district manager, San Francisco office, and Stephen Howard, assistant district manager, delivered six cedar trees to Hillsdale High School in San Matea, California, for the school's Arbor Day celebration. Jensen and Howard dug the holes and helped volunteer students plant the trees. The city of San Matea donated an additional nine trees that were planted by school staff. 13: STAMFORD OFFICE Isaias Granados, trimmer, and Jeremiah Green, district manager, from the Stamford office spent Arbor Day at Cove Island Park in Connecticut. The pair helped plant two London planetrees and a gingko tree, both commonly used by birds nesting in the nearby wildlife sanctuary. The City of Stamford purchased the trees and hosted the event, which was sponsored by Eastern Land Management, Inc., a Davey client, and the Stamford Tree Foundation, where Green is a member. 10 9 12 13 R/C ARBOR DAY 14: WEST CHICAGO OFFICE In Geneva, Illinois, the Natural Resource Committee of Geneva and the Geneva Park District Foundation hosted a Wine, Cheese and Trees fundraiser to provide funds for Arbor Day saplings. Davey donated $1,000 to the fundraiser. The district was able to purchase 50 burlap bound trees for a new park and Steve Matravers, assistant district manager, helped plant them on Arbor Day. Matravers also helped coordinate the fundraiser. The goal of the installations is to replace lost ash trees and build a healthier tree canopy in the city. 14 14
