11 May/June 2021 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN 11 1: DAVEY SURGERY OKLAHOMA UTILITIES The Oklahoma Urban Community Forestry Council (OUCFC) and the Oklahoma Forestry Services hosted a virtual Arbor Day celebration on Oklahoma's State Arbor Day, April 29, to celebrate cities designated a Tree City USA, utilities recognized as Tree Line USA and higher education institutions recognized as a Tree Campus USA. Damon McKissick, account manager, Oklahoma utilities, recently became a member of the OUCFC and arranged for Davey to donate a powder keg maple tree for the event. The tree was planted in the city of Paul's Valley, Oklahoma, which celebrated 40 years of being a Tree City USA in 2021. UTILITY CORPORATE 2: HUDSON TREE COMMISSION, SCOUT TROOP In preparation for Arbor Day, R.J. Laverne, manager of education and training, visited with Cub Scout Troop 3321 in Hudson, Ohio, on April 15 to give a presentation about the importance of trees. A few weeks later, on May 1, the troop joined other area Scout troops, the Hudson Tree Commission, and the Hudson City Parks Department to honor Arbor Day and plant 50 river birch and 50 tulip tree saplings at Cascade Park. The same day, the commission planted a Miyabe maple tree at the new Hudson Middle School building in Hudson, Ohio. Jason Brumbach, manager of business applications, corporate IT, is a member of the organization and participated in the ceremony. No students were in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 1: FACEBOOK LIVE AND TALKING TREES PODCAST Throughout the month of April, the Davey Talking Trees Podcast featured weekly Arbor Day-themed guests. Topics ranged from tree planting techniques and "the science of trees, fungi and diseases," to the benefits of trees to human health. The final guest for the month was Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. Each episode promoted the Davey Planting Project, through which listeners could receive free white pine tree seeds to plant. Listen to the Talking Trees Podcast on Apple, Spotify and other podcast platforms. Davey's Facebook Live events throughout April also promoted Arbor Day, with topics including tree climbing, jobs in arboriculture and a children's story time live reading of the book "Little Acorn" by Melanie Joyce. 1 15: WICKES/ARBORISTS The Village of Nyack in New York officially declared May 1 as Nyack Arbor Day in the village and a crew from Wickes/arborists, a Davey company, participated in the Arbor Day 2021 Extravaganza that day. As part of a Rotary Club project, the crew assisted volunteers in planting 21 trees, including redbuds, Japanese lilacs and crabapples along the roadway near Nyack Hospital. The trees were donated by Davey from a local nursery and the crew helped train volunteers in proper planting techniques. The crew also helped mulch and water the newly planted saplings. Ryan Kasak, Jeff Lambert, Connor Smith, Mark Sudak and John Wickes participated in the event. 15 2
