VISION
'ONEDAVEY' EFFORT RESTORES DAFFODIL HILL
AT LAKE VIEW CEMETERY
Forty-one volunteers from Davey's Northeast Ohio
Commercial Landscape Services territories, Davey Resource
Group, Residential/Commercial services offices and our
corporate office planted 150,000 daffodil bulbs at Daffodil
Hill in Cleveland's historic Lake View Cemetery.
"The volunteers donated their time to plant the bulbs as
a Davey Green Leaders effort," said Frank Monteleone,
national sales manager, Commercial Landscape Services.
"I'm proud of this group of volunteers for going above
and beyond to help our client. We have a great working
relationship with Lake View Cemetery and it's the reason
why we made the commitment to volunteer."
This planting effort restored Daffodil Hill to its former golden
glory. The maintenance of Daffodil Hill fell to the wayside
due to funding and the natural deterioration of existing bulbs.
Daffodil plantings started in the fall of 2019, with the first 100,000 bulbs,
at Davey CLS client Lake View Cemetery. Then in the fall of 2020, an
additional 50,000 bulbs were added to completely cover "Daffodil Hill."
Davey maintains the hill throughout the year. After the flowers bloom,
the vegetation is cut down to allow nutrients to return to the bulbs and
a bone meal application is applied to the soil to deter squirrels from
digging up the bulbs and eating them.
In 2020, people packed Lake View Cemetery to take pictures of the
restored "Daffodil Hill." The Cemetery staff had to close the gates at one
point because a four-hour line of cars had emerged to see Daffodil Hill.
A photo hanging in the cemetery's
office of the hill from the 1990s sparked
a conversation to bring it back to life.
Davey's Cleveland North CLS operations continue to
maintain Daffodil Hill, so the flowers will bring springtime
beauty to Lake View Cemetery for years to come.
"
When you're up in the tree you rely on yourself
and what you know. You feel the branches and you
make the decisions. There's instincts and lessons
you learn up there that you can't learn on the
ground. There's really a hands-on experience that
you pick up by doing it over and over. And you
get better and more confident.
