9 May/June 2021 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN 2: ALBANY OFFICE The Albany office hosted an "Ask the Arborist" station at the Pine Hollow Arboretum Arbor Day event on April 24. Joe Oszust, sales arborist, led tours of the arboretum. Visitors were able to make rubbings of tree bark onto construction paper as part of a plant passport scavenger hunt, view insects and plants through a microscope, and visit a tree identification station to get hands-on with twigs, leaves and other plant parts. 1: AKRON OFFICE – NEOMED Three employees from the Akron R/C office helped install a 3-inch caliper tulip poplar on the grounds of Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown, Ohio, for Arbor Day. The tree replaces a large poplar that fell during a recent storm. The crew was assisted by student volunteers and NEOMED grounds staff during the event. Blake Bishop, Justin Stephan and Eric Phillips participated in the installation. 4: CONCORD OFFICE SPRUCE MEMORIAL In honor of Arbor Day, the Concord R/C office planted a white spruce as a memorial tree on the property of a longtime Davey client. Since the 1600s, the family has maintained a farm in Massachusetts and been passionate about preserving the essence of historic New England and open space amidst a growing suburban society. A recently removed spruce tree on the same spot is a common winter sight, as the family would decorate it with lights to help drivers see an unlit bend in the roadway. For many of those years Davey has helped preserve the mature trees and wanted to honor the passing of the family's patriarch. 3: BARRINGTON OFFICE On April 24, the Barrington R/C office in Illinois participated in an Arbor Day event at Lake Barrington Shores. Landscape contractors and a group of volunteers, including Davey retiree Charlie Keppel, planted an American elm in a nearby forest preserve. The group also dedicated a plaque to volunteer conservation efforts, including clearing buckthorn within the preserve, and laid woodchips donated by the Barrington office for the walking paths. Peter Costales, sales arborist, attended the event, and the office donated $300 for Arbor Day T-shirts. Costales staffed a table with info about Davey services and native species. Keith Sykora, associate consultant, DRG Environmental Consulting services, donated a native seed mix to the volunteers to use in the forest preserve. R/C 7: LAKE BLUFF OFFICE On May 1, sales arborists Matt Latza and Patrick Etherington from the Lake Bluff office handed out small native shrubs to about 300 residents of Highland Park, Illinois, during a drive-thru Arbor Day event. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and environmental concerns like wasteful paper handouts, the office employed a large QR code poster that attendees were able to scan that was linked to Davey information on proper planting, watering and the importance of native plants. Attendees could also get Arbor Day activities for children and learn to set up an appointment at their home to help them with their existing trees. 6: EAST SAN ANTONIO OFFICE More than 300 people participated in the 3rd Annual Earth Day Celebration at the Headwaters at the Comal in New Braunfels, Texas, on April 24. Jess Divin, district manager, East San Antonio R/C office, distributed 200 native trees and shrubs. The trees were paid for by local business partner Cemex Corp. and grown by a local grower, Madrone Nurseries. Divin also answered questions about the species and gave tree advice. 8: MAIER TREE DRIVE-THRU OAKS For 19 years, Maier Tree & Lawn, a Davey company, has been involved with the city of Rochester's Arbor Day festivities. This year, sales arborists Tyler Lindblom and Jhad Fetting assisted volunteers from Rochester Public Utilities in handing out 1,000 bur oak whips in a drive-thru style event. The city purchased the saplings and volunteers bagged them before the event with the help of Maier Tree & Lawn employees. Ryan Brick, district manager, said the office also sponsors the Rochester Public Schools' Arbor Day poster contest. This year's poster theme was "Trees Save Energy and Clean the Air." 5: CRYSTAL LAKE OFFICE The Crystal Lake office donated a sugar maple to Dean Street Elementary School and Nick Broughton, sales arborist, helped plant it and educate a group of students about the benefits of trees, proper planting techniques and the benefits of mulching. Broughton's three children, Ian, Ely and Julia, have attended school at Dean Street and Ely, along with Broughton's nephew Gianni, joined the group that helped plant the maple. 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 7
