8 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2021 2: PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE In Florida, landscape technicians Glenn Thomas and Hugo Demarco, Patrick Air Force Base territory, planted a tangerine tree in front of the base's community center on Arbor Day. The base is a new contract with CLS and is part of the Hunt Military Communities, said Tom Currier, project manager. 1: CLEVELAND NORTH TERRITORY – CLEVELAND CLINIC POCKET PARK A vacant property owned by the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, was cleared, graded and prepared to become a new pocket park thanks to months of planning and work from the Cleveland North Commercial Landscape Services (CLS) territory, the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Holden Arboretum. A Davey crew, including Frank Broski, Eddie Hill, Steve Hovan, Vito Monteleone and Ed Yambor, planted 65 trees on site and saved an additional four trees for volunteers to plant during an Arbor Day event. The volunteers also planted 140 perennials at the new park to enhance visibility of newly paved sidewalks. The clinic is part of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree Campus Healthcare program and this park aims to bring green space to the urban area. ARBOR DAY CLS 1: CLEVELAND TREE COALITION As part of the Youth Environmental Conversation series, the Cleveland Tree Coalition hosted an "Ask the Arborist" session with Jim Jenkins, Davey Resource Group (DRG), and "Organic Connects," a Cleveland-area nonprofit that aims to provide environmental opportunities for school-age youth and residents of urban communities. The discussion was held through Facebook Live on April 29. The discussion was part of a mixed virtual and in-person Arbor Week schedule of events focused on increasing Cleveland's urban tree canopy from 18 percent to 30 percent by 2040. The event also highlighted the push for greater diversity within the tree care industry, Jenkins said. 3: WESTERN RESERVE LAND CONSERVANCY DRG and the West Cleveland Residential/Commercial (R/C) services office helped the Western Reserve Land Conservancy plant 20 trees along the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood in Cleveland as part of the nonprofit's Arbor Week. The trees were planted at the Michael Zone Recreation Dog Park through a $2,500 donation from Davey. Keith Geary, landscape trainee, West Cleveland office, assisted in the planting session on Arbor Day. DRG 1 2 3 4 4: DAVEY NURSERY – WOOSTER SCHOOLS The Davey Nursery provided 275 Kousa dogwoods and 275 sweetbay magnolia saplings to the Wooster City Schools in Wooster, Ohio. Students in different grades were given a sapling in a bag to take home and plant. Rick Hanshaw, branch manager, coordinated the sale and delivery. 2 3 3: WOODLAWN PLANTING A crew from the Woodlawn Cemetery and Arboretum territory in New York participated in an Arbor Day event held on cemetery grounds. Davey donated and planted two European beech trees and one katsura tree as more than 150 people observed the event. Herb Landmann, project developer, National Business Development Team, led two tree identification walks with visitors. Mark Nielsen, operations manager, CLS Eastern operations, and Jose Escobar, foreman, Woodlawn territory, planted the trees. 2: WASHINGTON ELM In Renton, Washington, Anne Jones, inventory arborist specialist, DRG, Environmental Consulting services, assisted Ian Gray, the Renton city forester, in planting an American elm tree in honor of Arbor Day.
