THE DAVEY BULLETIN

spouse Jeff Clingan. In addition to his
personal financial contribution, Burkhart has
donated his professional expertise to the
garden. With some of the climate issues
occurring in California with drought, Tony

Diego Botanic Garden, requested his
professional recommendations on some
trees struggling in the garden.
LEADERSHIP
GIVING BACK TO SAN DIEGO GARDEN BRINGS GREAT PRIDE
Len Burkhart, technical advisor, Davey Institute, considers
himself a "gardenholic." He and his spouse Jeff Clingan
go out of their way to visit gardens and arboreta throughout
the U.S. and Canada during their personal and
professional travel.
Burkhart feels these institutions are great resources for
Davey employees to learn from and support. That's why he
has supported botanic gardens across the country for years.
"Since moving to Southern California 12 years ago,
we have supported the San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG).
We believe public gardens play an important role in our
region," Burkhart said. "Through Davey's matching gift
program, we could increase our annual gift significantly."
At the 2017 North American Garden Tourism Conference,
the SDBG was a recipient of a 2017 'Top 10 North American
Gardens Worth Traveling For' Garden Tourism Award from
the American Public Gardens Association and the Canadian
DAVEY SPONSORS PARTNERS IN COMMUNITY FORESTRY
CONFERENCE
Davey was proud to be a platinum
sponsor of the Partners in Community
Forestry Conference in November in
Orange County, California. Davey's
sponsorship provided a "Rest and
Recharge" lounge area at the
conference where attendees could
take a break from sessions and
networking to get a little "me" time.

a great sense of pride as a supporter – both technically
and financially.
The Davey Matching Gift Program makes the donation
to organizations even more valuable, so he encourages
others in the company to use the program.
"SDBG is an amazing garden with an educational focus
on horticulture, native plants, and is active in plant
conservation," said Burkhart. "Some favorite areas of ours
include the cork oak and dragon tree collections, in addition
to the Bamboo Garden that boasts the largest public
collection of bamboo in North America."
