'LEGENDS' COMPETITION CELEBRATES
CLIMBING ARBORISTS OVER 40
Every sport has their legends, and the same can be said for tree climbing.
In conjunction with Florida's Arbor Day, the town of Windermere holds a Treebute
Arbor Day Festival that features the Legends Tree Climbing Championship,
an international championship for climbers 40 years old and over.
"We have a 74-year-old competitor and he competes every year. He's killing it,"
said Danae Jackson, southeastern recruiting coordinator. "We celebrate people
who can still climb on a daily basis."
The competition began in 2004. After setting up for the Florida Tree Climbing
Championship, the legend climbers would practice the events and it gradually
developed into a larger, separate event.
"The competition is meant to help younger competitors and teach them what
the judges are looking for at International Society of Arboriculture competitions,"
Danae said.
Danae and her husband Adam Jackson, district manager, Orlando R/C office,
have been organizers of the competition since 2007. Susan Carter, client
experience coordinator, also is involved in the event because of her involvement
on the tree board with the town of Windermere.
The competition celebrated its 15th anniversary in January. The competition was originally
called Geezers in the Treezers, but the name was changed to Legends Tree Climbing
Championship. Danae Jackson said the name was changed to make it sound more
dignified, as the climbers truly are legends.
OWNER'S BOX
"
Employee ownership
is one of the most
important aspects of
our company. It helps
us express to our
new employees that
you're not just a tree
trimmer. You're not
just a number. You
own part of this
organization. You're
part of a bigger
picture. You're part
of a family. And
that's the difference
between Davey and
some of the other
companies out there.
