A recent report from the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) shows that investing in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) strengthens communities and expands state economic growth. The employee ownership center published a report, "Economic Growth Through Employee Ownership," highlighting the benefits an ESOP provides not just to its members but to the surrounding community. The NCEO report states ESOP companies generate 2.5 percent more new jobs per year than they would if they were not employee-owned. Furthermore, a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 states that companies owned by an ESOP create a combined $19 billion in annual economic activity through profits returned to owners, sellers and employee-owners as a return on their investment. In the same study, researchers argued that "ESOPs contribute to overall economic growth through increased productivity and sales." ESOPs are stable. They maintain jobs while also creating new ones. Those are benefits to you and your community. In addition, growth and stability of ESOPs benefit your personal wealth. Forbes Magazine reported in 2015 that annual growth of ESOP firms outperforms companies listed in the S&P 500 by more than 4 percent – a contributing factor in stock value. But what about your future self? Studies have repeatedly shown investors in ESOPs accumulate more in retirement wealth than their counterparts at similar, publicly traded companies.
