15 May/June 2024 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN With one of the fastest growing populations in the United States, Wake County, North Carolina, recognized the need for environmentally sustainable growth in their area, noting one major factor to achieve this was to reverse the decline of the county's tree canopy. Using a bucket truck, Jaques wire-tied a wicker basket to a tree as an artificial nest before transporting the owlet into it. The owlet quickly adapted to its environment and relaxed in the nest. "There's pride in knowing you're doing something good for the community, the environment, and the wildlife," Jaques said. The county is now using Davey's TreeKeeper ® Canopy software to analyze the data captured by the DRG teams and create a road map for tree plantings in identified areas of need. Joyner directed the recent effort to plant 1,600 cypress, oak, and pine tree seedlings in Morrisville, North Carolina, within four open acres at the N.C. 54/N.C. 540 interchange. "The planting was a proof-of-concept pilot project to plant trees within vacant highway rights-of-way, which reduces the mowing responsibilities of the North Carolina Department of Transportation and helps the county expand its tree canopy and the environmental benefits trees provide as they grow," Joyner said. JOYNER VOLUNTEERS, DAVEY DONATES SEEDLINGS Wake County held a tree planting at Kellam-Wyatt Farm, a new 59-acre nature preserve. "We planted approximately 50 trees, including persimmon, swamp white oak, swamp chestnut oak, and Nuttall oak," Joyner said. "In addition, Davey donated more than 100 persimmon seedlings to the volunteers as a giveaway to take home and plant." VISION G tree
