13 May/June 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN EAST ATLANTIC OPERATIONS WINTER INTERN EXPERIENCE The East Atlantic Residential/Commercial operations got a jump start on hiring 2020 interns. In January, 12 interns participated in a two-day training at the King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, office, which was held in conjunction with the Davey Institute of Horticulture Sciences (D.I.H.S.). John Jastrzembski, commercial sales arborist, Mid-Atlantic Operating group, and Chris Klimas, Mid-Atlantic operations manager, wanted to refresh the internship program, have a stronger outreach to college students and give Davey a competitive edge with the competition. "Our goal was to get these interns committed by January 1 to Davey, out ahead of the competitors," Klimas said. "We wanted to reward that commitment by allowing them to start their internship earlier and provide training sooner." Kris Amerson, Northeast & New England recruiting coordinator, and other members of the recruiting team started communicating with students about these internship opportunities during the fall collegiate career fairs and were given the go-ahead to extend internship offers. The two-day training at the King of Prussia office was a way to accelerate the onboarding process, so they could start working in the field right when their internships start. The D.I.H.S. students and the interns had a few classes together, but there were specific breakout sessions for the interns. "We decided to co-mingle it with the D.I.H.S. class, so they could have some overlap with the Davey Institute instructors," said Phil Snyder, vice president, East Atlantic Operations. "We wanted them to have some social and technical learning time with other recent graduates that tend to make up the D.I.H.S. class. We wanted to connect the interns with people they would be potentially working with in their home territories." During the training, the interns started the trimmer C training, plant health care development training, received chipper instruction and an overview of the Davey Company, Amerson said. Amerson's goal during the training was to simply make the interns feel like part of the Davey team. "Whether they spend the summer or dig in and make a career here, I wanted them to feel welcome," Amerson said. "With starting the onboarding process early, they are ready to come in and start working. They are already part of the team."
