14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2020 WISCONSIN FORESTRY STUDENTS TOURED DAVEY INSTITUTE Students from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Mid-State Technical College, Milwaukee Area Technical College, Madison Area Technical College and Gateway Technical College visited Davey's corporate campus as part of a bus tour headed to the Tree Care Industry Association headquarters in Manchester, New Hampshire. Students heard from several speakers, including: Greg Ina, executive vice president of the Davey Institute and employee development; Tim Walsh, manager, corporate safety; Kodi Reidel, laboratory coordinator and diagnostician; and Chrissy Balk, technical advisor. B.Y.U. VISITED DAVEY EAST BAY Over 50 students enrolled at Brigham Young University-Idaho recently had the opportunity to visit an active tree care worksite, thanks to a crew from the East Bay R/C office. As part of their visit, the students talked with BYU graduates currently working for Davey, including Brian Baker, market manager, R/C services, and Dale Schvaneveldt, assistant district manager, East Bay office, and they visited a jobsite in Walnut Creek, California. Davey has an ongoing relationship with the school, said Jason Evans, operations manager, R/C services, Western operating group. Students from BYU-Idaho's agronomy, horticulture, agriculture tech and business tracks visited a working East Bay crew in early 2020. "It gives the students an actual snapshot of what we do and why we do it. When you have an active crew with team members climbing, using aerial devices, it definitely resonates," Evans said. "We speak at their campus every year, and BYU is a huge fan of Davey and what we do." Seeing the jobsite and tree care operations up close and personal, while also learning about potential opportunities for careers after graduation, was part of the goal, said Justin Maughan, a plant science faculty member at BYU-Idaho. Students from several Wisconsin colleges visited Davey on their way to tour the Tree Care Industry Association offices in late 2019. As part of the Davey stop, students received small candy bars upon their arrival and full-sized candy bars at the end of their visit to learn about employee ownership at Davey through stock appreciation.
