3 September/October 2019 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN AN 'EXCLUSIVE' CLUB As Davey employees, we are part of a special group of workers. That we can say we are employee-owners, that we own a part of where we work, is a comparatively "exclusive" club when you look at the entire labor force across the U.S. and Canada. In the U.S., there are about 6,700 companies managed and owned by an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, according to the National Center for Employee Ownership. The ESOP Association of Canada reported 200 members in 2018. Those ESOPs cover more than 14 million people total. Of course, 14 million employee owners are a lot of people. But compare that number with the 180 million people who, combined, make up the entire labor force in the U.S. and Canada, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Statistics Canada. Employee-owners in North America account for roughly 8 percent of the entire labor force. That's employed and unemployed workers in both countries. That means about 92 percent – or the overwhelming majority – of workers in North America don't experience the kind of benefits you enjoy if you've chosen to become an employee-owner at Davey. SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE Every October, the ESOP Association and its member companies celebrate Employee Ownership Month. The idea is to use these four weeks to celebrate the spirit of employee-ownership. We celebrate Davey's 40 years of employee ownership throughout this September/October issue of the Bulletin with several features. In Ask the CEO, we asked Davey President and CEO Pat Covey why he became an employee-owner and what he sees are the values and benefits of employee-ownership on page 4. In From the Archives, we tell part of the untold story of employee- ownership at Davey by explaining how the original ESOP from 1979 planted the seed for our success. As we have all year, we share your fellow employees' thoughts on employee ownership in the Owner's Box features throughout the issue. You can also watch these employees talk about employee ownership on Davey's YouTube channel; just search for "Davey employee ownership." And, we offer some basic facts about employee ownership at Davey, including the most recent share price, our latest ranking on the NCEO Employee Ownership 100 list, how to become an employee-owner and more. It's a great time to be an employee- owner at Davey Tree, and it's certainly something to celebrate. So, take some time with your Davey team and reflect on the success and rewards of 40 years of employee-ownership at Davey before the year is over. Forty years is certainly something to celebrate!
