DAVEY AROUND THE WORLD
FOR THE LOVE OF THE MOUNTAINS
Gregory Vanderhoof, UVM lead specialist, Davey Resource Group,
and his best friend hiked 40 miles from Edison Lake to Devil's
Postpile National Monument, which is part of the John Muir Trail
in the California Sierra Nevada mountains.
Vanderhoof hiked along the spine and across the High Sierra
region, which is a region of the Sierra Nevadas in eastern
California. He said they did 10 miles a day for four days.
"There's something about getting into the backcountry that resets
the senses, calms you down and makes you more effective at
work," he said. "This hike was very good for that."
Vanderhoof plans to hike portions of the John Muir Trail and
eventually hike the full 211 miles. He's hoping to complete the
rest of it with his sons once they are old enough.
Vanderhoof was inspired to complete this trail because of his love
for the mountains.
"I've been aware of this trail for as long as I can remember," he said.
"The inspiration came from my love for the outdoors, the trees
you see up there, getting out in nature and being surrounded by it."

At the top of Silver Pass at 11,000 feet, Gregory Vanderhoof said it was a cool
view because he could look along the spine of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
