4 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2019 I became an employee-owner the first day I could. For me, the easy choice was to sign up for as much of the payroll deduction as I could afford, as fast as I could. My personality is such that I always want to be part of a team. I played a lot of team sports, so it meant a lot to know we were working toward a collective objective. Because of employee ownership, I knew we could all benefit from that collaborative effort. That was a very attractive concept to me, and still is. A big benefit is how convertible our shares can be. The flexibility, the liquidity of it is an awesome value if something comes up. From a company point of view, we hope to see employees who are consistent investors in Davey Tree for the long run, building a retirement nest egg. But we're not locking you in forever. And if you have a financial need come up, Davey will redeem your shares during the next trading window and absolutely you can take care of that. From an industry standpoint, employee-ownership allows us to control our own destiny. You're starting to see more and more money in our industry from private equity and venture capital firms, which can have a shorter-term view of their investment. Our ownership structure allows us to take a long-term approach as a management team. Of course, we want to perform in the short-term, but not at the expense of the bigger, longer-term goal of the company, which is to provide a great place to work and at the same time provide employees with a way to buy-in to the company. The longevity of employee ownership at Davey says there's a belief in the ownership structure. Employee ownership has allowed us to create a culture that has withstood a lot of economic and business challenges over time. We've created a culture through the people we hire and promote, and I like to think that's because employee ownership fosters hard-working, savvy businesspeople. DAVEY RESOURCE GROUP It's been wonderful working with Davey these last few years. Davey has, by far, been the best contractor because of your willingness to partner with us to make things run more efficiently. Not many contractors can show a 20 percent design quality improvement in the matter of a couple years or that less than 1 percent of the 20,000 plus poles they touch each year are rejected due to quality or constructability issues. I'm so thankful I got the opportunity to work with a top-notch company. Lisa Zyonse Consumers Energy EAST CLEVELAND OFFICE The crew came today to take down 12 very large trees. What an amazing team! Due to the size of the trees and proximity to the house I needed a team I could trust. Without a doubt they were professional, knowledgeable and skilled. The yard was left tidier than before they came. Nicola Mosley Chagrin Falls, Ohio EAST BAY OFFICE Joe Berg, Efrain Estrada, George Thompson, Jorge Rodriguez The team worked together in a very efficient way. They were professional, hardworking and knew what to do at all times. A very thorough cleanup was done. Joe Berg, the district manager, is one of a kind. He answered all our questions in detail. Joe is knowledgeable, very obliging and proposed an effective plan. Truly an uncut diamond!
