14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | January/February 2018 CLEARING THE WAY FOR MORE GROWTH Employees from Davey's Richmond R/C office volunteered to help the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden during a Central Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association (CVNLA) work day. Crews from several tree and landscape companies volunteered to help. Alec Selz, sales arborist, and CVNLA board secretary, and Phil Tate, climbing foreman, represented Davey. The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is a client of the Richmond R/C office and is closely tied with CVNLA, which Above right: Davey and other tree care crews working together. "We removed a lot of trees and small saplings to clear the area, so they could do some planting in the area in the future," Selz said. He said a line of strong storms moved through the Richmond area in June 2016 and brought down some trees. The volunteers worked to remove the old storm damage. FIELD NOTES Another part of the project involved clearing a stream of debris. The debris was removed so the stream could be incorporated into the garden. Selz said this was an opportunity to help not only their client, but a Richmond landmark. "It shows that we are supporting part of the Richmond community," he said. NORTH AMERICAN TREE CLIMBING COMPETITION The very best tree climbers in North America gathered in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the fall to climb their way to the title of North American Champion. Davey, a major supporter of the event, sponsored the Masters' Challenge, the final segment of the competition. The competition was held in beautiful Liberty Park, where attendees and competitors were greeted with the impressive view of mountains and brightly colored fall leaves. Davey also staffed a booth in the Arbor Fair and talked to attendees about the economic benefits of trees. Davey was represented by members of the recruiting team and corporate communications. The Masters' Challenge tree was one of the largest London Plane trees in Utah.
