"When I was younger, I had big ideas, but I didn't follow through. Now I don't say anything I don't plan to do. I may not say as much, but when I say something, I'm going to do it. I believe it's my sense of resolve that influences that mentality. Looking back and seeing my own improvements on this has made me realize that resolve is really a skill, a skill that can be acquired and improved upon on the job. "When you commit to a specific task, people tend to check with you to make sure it happens, and that's a good thing. As employee owners, we all rely on each other. Hour by hour, day by day, that's always in the back of your mind. It makes people want to get things done. If you see a problem, come up with a solution and follow-through." EMBODYING LEADERSHIP AND RESOLVE AT DAVEY CANOPY ABOVE THE Know a Davey employee who personifies expertise or improvement, two of our company values? Email their name, the value they exhibit and why they should be featured to bulletin@davey.com. Underneath our actions on the job, always present, lay our company values. Today, we're shining a light on two individuals who personify leadership and resolve, two of our core values. Leaders, like many of you reading this, contribute, manage and inspire others on the job. To effectively lead, you must have resolve – or the firm determination to decide on and achieve a course of action. The two values go hand in hand. Tim Holley on Leadership District manager, Residential/Commercial services London, Ontario, Canada "I was only 24 when I became a district manager, so I had a lot to learn. The first big lesson was what a huge support system Davey has. My mentors made themselves available, shared constructive criticism and gave good direction. It was absolutely a challenge learning how to be a leader. But working with good people helps, and Davey draws really good people. "Now, I hope people see me as a leader they can trust and talk to about run-of-the-mill issues. Every day, at our Davey stretches, I'm there with my team to listen, talk or support them. I want to provide opportunities for them. My goal is to give back to others and do what people, such as John Arico, James Doyle, Mike Nash, Blaire Sayers, and David Tonigussi did for me. "If you want to be a leader at Davey, don't think 'what's in it for me?' Think 'how can I help?' It makes you stand out and get noticed. Then, make it known you want to advance and become a leader. "Remember, you aren't just a leader at Davey. You're also an environ- mental and industry leader. At Davey, we care for a lot more trees than we'll ever take down, and people see that. Longevity speaks volumes. We've been at this since 1880, and our growth over the last 30 years says a lot about our leadership." 28 The Davey Bulletin | September/October 2017 Anthony Longoria Tim Holley Anthony Longoria on Resolve Supervisor, Appalachian Power, Utility services Wytheville, Virginia
