HONORING VETERANS THROUGH DAY OF SERVICE Three employees from Davey's Buffalo R/C office devoted a day of service to the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park in honor of U.S. military service members for Arbor Day. Tom Anderson, sales arborist, Lukas Suzano, foreman, and Adam Martin, groundman, volunteered their Saturday to do some pruning, landscaping and consulting work on the grounds. The crew pruned trees around memorials dedicated to different wars, so the signage containing the names of service members from Western New York would be visible, Anderson said. Anderson said the military park has a grove of beech trees, and people were walking underneath them compacting the soil. He recommended fencing off the area to preserve the trees. There also were tree branches overhanging a section of the fence near an area where the park has military jets and rockets on permanent display. The crew pruned the trees' branches back to keep debris off the exhibit and prevent branches from encroaching on the military jets and rockets. The most rewarding part of the day came for Anderson when he witnessed his crew being thanked for volunteering their time to beautify the park. "The most memorable thing about the park was not only speaking to the people walking through the park and listening to them give us recognition for what we do, but also that we were contributing to something as important as remembering our veterans and those who have served our country," Ander- son said. The director of the park gave the crew free passes to board the ships and the submarine on display there as a thank you for their service to the park. Anderson and his wife toured the ships on Memorial Day. "We went down to celebrate what Memorial Day is all about," Anderson said. "We decided to go to the park because we thought it would be a nice gesture, another way to show our support for veterans." September/October 2017 | The Davey Bulletin 19 Lukas Suzano hung out by the jets. One project the crew worked on was clearing back branches to keep debris off the jets and rockets.
