26 The Davey Bulletin | May/June 2017 DAVEY INSTITUTE MAKES HISTORY WITH LIVE STREAM EVENT In January, the Davey Institute did something it had never done before. It created its first live stream video event. As its name suggests, live streams are broadcast over the inter- net in real time, and the event is more interactive than a webinar. "The use of webinars is quite pervasive throughout Davey, and our connection to Office 365 and Skype has helped boost this," said Greg Ina, vice president and general manager of research, recruiting and human resource development. "There's a lot of momentum there within Davey operations. The next logical step is to make webinars more dynamic and interactive, and that's what live streams accomplish." For the Institute's first live stream, Davey partnered with Dr. Dan Herms, a distinguished entomologist and professor at The Ohio State University, to present on the impact of climate change on arboriculture and vegetation management. Ina sees this live stream as just the beginning. "We've got a deep commitment to instruction and classroom training at Davey. Live streams give us an opportunity to complement our many in-person training opportunities." During Davey's first live stream with Dan Herms, Ina moderated the many CANOPY ABOVE THE Thanks to a robust technical team, Davey captured a high-quality video that employees can access right now on Davey's Learning Management System. About 70 people gathered at the Davey Institute for Dan Herms' presentation on the impact of climate change on arboriculture and vegetation management while roughly 100 more people watched it live via a stream over the internet.
