May/June 2017 | The Davey Bulletin 27 SPOTLIGHT IN THE Sandra Reid has been elected to the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) board of directors. The NCEO is a non-profit membership and research organization founded in 1981 to provide objective, reliable information on employee ownership to businesses, employees and the public. Reid, vice president, corporate communications & strategic planning administration, started her three-year term in April. "I'm proud to bring the knowledge and resources of Davey Tree to the NCEO board in service of members and participants in employee ownership programs," Reid said. Congrats Sandra! The Davey Tree Expert Company won a Tree Care Industry Association Professional Safety Award in the Outstanding Company Contribution Award category. Pat Covey, president and COO (left), and Joe Tommasi, corporate director of safety, stand with the award. Davey won for our Electronic Close Call Communication Process (e-Close Call Communicator). In April 2014, Davey implemented the Close Call Communication Process using the paper Close Call Communicator. In 2016, the program became fully electronic. The electronic format streamlines the process for all Davey employees to report close call forms. Congratulations! John Ransom, district manager, Ottawa, The Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada, Limited, received the D.I.T.S. Faculty Award at the 2017 D.I.T.S. banquet in Kent, Ohio. The Faculty Award is presented to the D.I.T.S. participant who best exemplifies the spirit of seeking knowledge and the willingness to share that knowledge with others. "I would like to thank everyone that nominated me for this award. To be recognized by the staff and the attendees of the 2017 D.I.T.S class is truly an honor and something I will cherish for the rest of my life." Congratulations John! Eric Foley (right) received the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences 2017 Golden Oak Award from RJ Laverne, manager of education and training. This prestigious award is presented to one D.I.T.S. student each year who accumulated the highest amount of points on all assignments throughout the month-long program. Foley, sales arborist with Maier Tree & Lawn, a Davey company, had his eyes set on receiving this coveted award, and through hard work and perseverance he made it happen. "It puts me in elite company," Foley said. "I think it's a great honor and will serve me well going forward."Congrats Eric! Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., (WSSI), a Davey company, was awarded a Fairfax County Land Conservation Award for the Wakefield Park Stream Restoration. WSSI designed the project and provided full-time construction oversight and support for the restoration of more than 3,400 linear feet of two separate urban channels that run through the forested floodplain of Wakefield Park. WSSI also completed the wetland delineation, endangered and threatened species surveys, and a complete tree inventory of the project area. WSSI surveyors also captured detailed site conditions to support the design process. Congratulations everyone!
