SPOTLIGHTING HOW SOFTWARE IMPROVES UTILITY SERVICES
Davey's role as a leader in the green
industry took center stage at the
Latitude 2016 conference, where
managers in Davey's Utility services
and enterprise solutions talked to a
crowd of more than 600 about mobile
resource management software.
Davey's Kevin Bauer, operations
manager, Lakes region, Greg Dykes,
manager, technical services, and
Laura Wimer, financial manager,
Utility services, led a session at the
conference about how Davey uses
Telogis software in utility trucks to
improve driver safety and efficiency.
Davey uses Telogis integrated mobile
applications for its fleet solutions
program, which installs iPad mini
tablets inside the cabs of our trucks
to give our employees access to
driver vehicle inspection reports, driver
performance reports, electronic safety
tailgate documents, training videos
and other materials with the goal of
improving efficiency and safety.
Through digital vehicle inspection
reports, drivers can fill out an
inspection form, take photographs and
submit all the information instantly to
a central database. Through real-time
reporting, the data support efficient
asset deployment by tracking
non-productive idling, start times and
time on site. The data also support
safer driving by tracking driver habits
through a mobile driver interface that
reports on driver performance and
rates them against their peers,
encouraging improved driving through
friendly competition.
"One thing that we've noticed is we're
getting utilization reports so much
quicker through Telogis," Wimer said.
"We're able to pull those utilization
reports daily if we want to. That's a
real benefit. When you see a truck
sitting idle, or a truck's utilization at
30 percent and you know it should
be at 85 percent, you find out right
away. Knowing the needs of all of our
accounts and seeing a unit like this as
being underutilized, we're able to see
that right away and offer to transfer
that unit to another client or region."
Top drivers in the program are also
rewarded for earning high marks.
"We're no longer just contacting an
employee letting them know they
did something wrong," Wimer said.
"We're letting them know what
they did right. We're rewarding our
employees for driving safer, paying
attention, and for really keeping both
themselves and the public safe."
