March/April 2017 | The Davey Bulletin 11 SAFETY FOR ONE AND FOR ALL Here, Johnny Wilson, manager, field safety support, leads the group in discussion at the Davey Personal Excellence Seminar. Did you know for every one human error there may be many contributing factors? But when we identify and address these factors beforehand, we can prevent errors from happening. Forty-five Davey employees came together in January to learn how at the Davey Personal Excellence Seminar. Below are three tools they learned to keep themselves and their crews safe. Use these Davey Personal Excellence tools to help keep you safe and mitigate errors before you begin work. TWIN Analysis: Identify and address conditions that interfere with successful performance and increase the probability of error. • Task Demands: Time pressure, high work load, simultaneous multiple tasks or repetitive action • Work Environment: Distractions, departures from routine, confusing displays or work-arounds • Individual Capabilities: Unfamiliarity with task, lack of training, new technique never used before or poor communication skills • Human Nature: Stress, habit patterns, faulty assumptions or over confidence Three-Point Communication: Create a clear understanding among individuals working together. • Say your message. The more specific you are, the better. • Repeat. Have the listener paraphrase your message and call out important information. • Confirm the information repeated back to you is accurate. The 3 V's: Critically examine the work and ensure it matches the instructions, data and observation of work-related conditions. • Visualize. Before you start, envision the task you're about to perform. • Verify. Pause and verify the data and evidence you're looking at matches what you've been told. If there's a discrepancy, investigate and resolve before starting work. • Validate. Do not assume anything! Always rely on accurate and timely data to ensure proper work procedures and practices.
