VISION 20/20: BRINGING DAVEY VALUES TO LIFE
Have you heard the story of how
Davey became an employee-
owned company?
Back in November of 1977, the Davey
family announced they wanted to
sell the company. Just 18 days later,
Davey's top managers presented the
first proposal for the employees to
buy the company. This way, the rich
traditions, culture and work ethic of
Davey Tree would live on.
But the Davey family had reservations.
Would the employees have enough
money to survive a bad year? Could
they properly finance the company?
So, the family considered other buyers
and options.
It wasn't until May of 1978 that the
employees presented their second offer
– then their third offer in July. Another
two months passed before the board
approved the deal in September of
1978. Six months later, the company
officially changed hands from the
Davey family to the employees.

It's the way you talk to clients with
honesty and respect, or the reason
you study for industry certifications.
It's the Davey difference.
For the rest of 2017, we'll be sharing
how Davey employees, like you,
personify our company values. In each
Bulletin issue you'll find an article on
our values. We'll delve into what each
value signifies and share stories of
employees across North America who
personify these values.
Below is a snapshot of our company
values we'll be covering this year.

• Safety
• Improvement
• Expertise

Four hundred and eighty-one days
– that's how long it took for the idea
of employee-ownership to become
reality. During those 18-plus months,
employees never gave up. They called
countless banks, held meeting after
meeting and continued to crunch the
numbers before presenting each new
plan.
That's how those Davey employees
embodied resolve. They committed
to their idea and did whatever was
necessary to make it happen.
Today, that value still guides what
we believe in and how we behave at
Davey. That's what a value is. With
each new step, these long-held values,
like resolve, guide the company.
In addition to resolve, Davey's other
core company values are integrity,
safety, expertise, improvement
and leadership.
You're the one who brings these
values to life. Each day, you embody
these shared beliefs, which impact
