8 The Davey Bulletin | November/December 2016 ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS Davey's Sergio Lopez-Juarez used his bucket truck to save a woman from her apartment after a kitchen fire broke out. This photo from his bucket shows the fire department ladder truck responding to the fire. Bravery is the difference between those who act and those who wait. Davey's Sergio Lopez-Juarez, foreman for the San Francisco R/C office, exemplified true bravery when he rescued a woman from a burning building while on the job. It all started the morning after July Fourth. Lopez-Juarez started his workday by driving in his bucket truck to the day's first job site to prune trees. While pruning, he heard terrified cries for help from the neighboring building. Fire had trapped a woman in her burning apartment. Without hesitating, Lopez-Juarez called down to his crew member to reposition the bucket outside her window. He found the woman frantically gesturing for her wheelchair while the apartment sprinklers rained down water and smoke filled the room. Calmly, Lopez-Juarez told the woman not to worry about her wheelchair. "We need to save your life," he said. Lopez-Juarez helped her crawl into the bucket. Her escape from the fire sparked a roar of relieved cheers from the crowd that had gathered below. The bucket safely reached the ground, delivering its two occupants to safety, as the San Francisco Fire Department arrived. "Everyone was cheering, saying thank you and good job," Lopez-Juarez said. Even the fire department thanked him for his heroic actions. Lopez-Juarez, being the humble man he is, didn't share his incredible tale until the next day at work. Genuinely impressed by his co-worker's good deed, sales arborist Nick Crawford turned to social media to share the story. Davey's corporate communications team followed suit. The story reached over 32,000 people through Davey's social media accounts. When asked why he rescued the woman, Lopez-Juarez responded simply. "I felt like I had to help her," he said.
