The Davey Bulletin | November/December 2016
developed in 2016, lets the Institute
team create pollinator habitats tailored
to clients' requests.
Davey Resource Group's Carolyn
Matthews, project manager, New
York City, said the presentations
provided valuable information helpful in
explaining pollinator gardens to clients.
"It's important to learn about the
research involved in order to give
the clients a broader understanding
of the necessity for plant diversity
and what can be achieved with the
pollinator gardens," Matthews said.

LEADING THROUGH SCIENCE
The Davey Institute hosted the
inaugural Field Operations Pollinator
Day at the Shalersville Research
Station in Shalersville, Ohio, to
showcase the environmental and
industry benefits of pollinators.
For most environmentally conscious
residential and commercial clients
the idea of developing pollinator-
friendly spaces is just starting to
gain popularity. The pollinator day
aimed to educate Davey employees
about this growing movement.
"Our pollinator-focused research
includes several trials aimed at
evaluating seed stock, improving
our planting techniques and evaluating
the success of our Plant Health Care
(PHC) initiatives for pollinator habitats,"
said Anand Persad, manager of
arboriculture and plant sciences at
the Institute.
Persad explained to pollinator day
attendees what it takes to have a
turn-key pollinator program, with help
from the Institute's Arboriculture and
Plant Sciences Team, through a series
of informational stations.
Davey's Kodi Stebner, lab assistant,
and Anna Detoro, bio-ecological
coordinator, showcased a thriving
pollinator garden with 17 diverse
pollinator plant species. Surprisingly,
this lush garden was only planted
seven weeks prior.
After understanding what goes into
a pollinator garden, attendees then
learned what it takes to create one.
The Institute team, including John
Siefer, lab technician, Richard Rathjens,
technical advisor, and Greg Mazur,
technical advisor, created a pollinator
garden right before the attendee's
eyes. Siefer laid wildflower seed
using a new seed-spraying technology
the Institute created through the
bio-ecological lab.
