March/April 2014 | 9 Students from Mahoning County Career and Technical Center help Davey's Jarod Emerson (bottom, center) pave a pathway in Peterson Park, located in Poland, Ohio. P roblem-solving how to replace a rocky pathway at Peterson Park in Poland, Ohio, resulted in a Davey-led paving lesson for students in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center's horticulture program. Mary Emerson, horticulture instructor, wanted her students to have an experience working with hardscapes. So she reached out to her son, Jarod Emerson, now an account manager at Davey's Baltimore commercial landscape services branch. Davey donated equipment and worked with the park and students to develop a plan for the path. "We had the kids on site for three days straight, moving the brick chips, laying down base and putting in the pavers," Emerson says. "It's a good learning experience for the kids," he adds. "A lot of them had not been exposed to hardscape. It's a lot of fun because there is a solid project when you're done." About 15 students ages 16 to 22 helped with the project, using Davey's stationary cut-off saw and hardscaping tools. They contributed ideas for brick patterns and discussed treatments for the engraved, commemorative bricks. Emerson, an avid volunteer and Eagle Scout, values community service. "The more we get out there as Davey, and the more work we do with students who are up-and-coming in our industry, the better," he says. "They see what we're doing and think, 'Maybe I can come out and work with Davey and help people.'" Paving the Way W ood chips Davey donated construct- ed a trail built to commemorate a physical education teacher and coach from Saline High School in Saline, Mich. General Foreman Mark Stackhouse esti- mates the eight crews running last summer trucked about 40 loads of wood chips per week to the school property. That's roughly 400 batches of wood chips this summer that went to a worthy community cause. "We always try to find someone who is in need of the chips," Stackhouse says, relating the school contacted Davey to request wood chips for the trail project. The Mike Price Memorial Trail was dedicated in October 2013, and the project was a collaborative local effort, including organizations such as the Saline Rotary Club, Saline Community Education, the SHS cross country and soccer teams, the local Boy Scout troop, Davey and other landscaping vendors. The outreach of volunteers like Davey touched the hearts of community members. As Stackhouse confirms, "It's nice to be of help."
