C
limbing into a Davey bucket truck cab is
a big thrill for the younger set. There's
nothing like a truck to spark a grin and curiosity
from toddlers or grade-schoolers who wonder
what it would be like to drive that big rig.
Richmond, Va.'s Touch a Truck event,
sponsored by the city's Junior League, gives
children an opportunity to see, touch and
explore big trucks and machinery of all kinds.
Plus, they get to meet the people who protect
and serve the community.
So Mark Bennett, district manager for
Davey's Richmond R/C office, parked a Davey
bucket truck with a chipper at the event, held
at Richmond International Raceway in October
2013. The vehicle attracted a line of pint-sized
guests who waited to climb in and look
around, he says.
"It was a great opportunity to interact with
families," Bennett says. "The kids were all
excited, Davey had an opportunity to support
the Junior League's event, and it was a win-win
for everyone."
Bennett explained to the curious little truck
enthusiasts how the chipper works. They
were fascinated by the bucket, which was not
elevated so they could get a closer look. "The
kids were excited—it was a good time," says
Bennett, relating this was the first time Davey
participated in the event, and he'll look forward
to doing it again next year.
The event raised more than $35,000 to assist
the Junior League in promoting volunteerism
and improving communities, including
programs such as Kids in the Kitchen, Good
Sports and Families First.
As Bennett says, "It's good to show the
local residents that we care about making an
impact in the community."
