The Big Picture News from Davey's corporate office. 20 | March/April 2014 Davey Grows New Branches T he Davey Tree Expert Company kicked off the new year with the acquisition of Maier Forest and Tree in Rochester, Minn., and Superior NW Tree & Shrub Care, Inc., in Seattle, Wash. This builds on a long list of acquisitions over the past seven years, and the growth is part of a larger expansion strategy, explains Pat Covey, chief operating officer for U.S. operations. "These additions will strengthen Davey's presence in Minnesota and Washington," he says. "It also brings us additional regional business expertise and skilled arborists, and it allows us to serve our clients better." "We are excited to welcome these companies and their talented teams into the Davey family," Covey continues. "We have no doubt they will benefit from Davey's diversified service offerings, technology and equipment resources, research and development capability, and of course, the culture of employee ownership." Owner and founder Jay Maier says his company has been in the Rochester, Minn., area for 14 years. His decision to choose Davey was based on his personal knowledge of the company. His company specializes in pruning, tree and stump removal, plant health care and consulting services. "My career as an arborist began after college in 1994 with Davey Tree," he says. "I cut my teeth under their care, and I owe much of my knowledge to Davey arborists who were my coworkers. I know first-hand that Davey shares our values and our commit- ment to client satisfaction." Superior NW has provided services to the Seattle area for the past eight years and offered many aspects of residential tree care, including tree preservation, consultation and diagnosis and hazardous tree removal. Owner and founder Anthony Moran says he chose Davey because he liked the additional career and arboricultural training opportunities that Davey offered his employees. Furthermore, Moran says the clients would see an increase in the number of services offered. "While the logo and color of our trucks may change," Moran says, "our emphasis on high quality tree care and exceptional service delivered by local arborists remains the same—and we have several exciting new services to offer." New Davey Offices Sprout Up in Seven U.S. Cities D avey has opened seven new branch offices in major cities throughout the U.S. in the first quarter of the year. The additional offices are located in cities including: Austin, Texas; Baltimore, Md.; Chicago, Ill.; Detroit, Mich.; Napa, Calif.; Pittsburgh, Pa. and St. Louis, Mo. The addition- al offices will expand Davey's presence and strengthen Davey's brand in these markets, says Jim Stief, executive vice president, operations. "When we choose to do a market expansion, it's really about creating opportunity," Stief says. "Certainly, it allows us to provide more resources to our clientele. However, it also gives our employee-owners a chance to grow and mature." "We only add offices when we see great potential both within the market and within our employees," he adds. "The following seven district managers are a perfect example — they have a combined service time of almost 100 years, each is a certified arborist and, in general, represent some of the best and brightest Davey has to offer." • Tom Chaky, North Austin office • Todd Armstrong, North Baltimore office • Tony Brugger, Southeast Chicago office • Sean Barlette, Northwest Detroit office • Paul Dubois, Napa office • Todd Sherbondy, East Pittsburgh office • Greg Wilson, West St. Louis office "Most of these managers have lived and worked in these areas for many years," Stief says. "They know the unique challenges of each landscape, and I know they are eager to share their knowledge with their new neighborhoods." Furthermore, because they work at an employee-owned company, Davey employees capitalize on these opportunities when they are presented, Stief says. "As employee-owners, our field people have a vested interest in the company and have a greater commitment to our clients and to each other," he says. "They want this chance to prove themselves, and we are confident of their success."
