I t was one of the coldest weeks of the year, but the Residential/Commercial Office Coordinator Council (OCC) accomplished a lot during its visit to Kent, Ohio, Jan. 29 – 30. Members discussed and reviewed OCC's history, mission statement, goals and member responsibilities, as well as listened to brief presentations from corporate departments. While new members Patrick Alexander and Karin Walgren connected with existing members, the OCC thanked immediate past members Lea Candelario and Terri Parente for their service. The final day wrapped up with a tour of the Kent Historical Society, where the OCC visited the Martin L. Davey Room (pictured) and learned much about the early history of the company. Choosing Growth W ith the acquisition of Cortese Tree Specialists, Davey increases its presence in the Knoxville, Tenn., area, where its Wolf Tree subsidiary already operates. Pat Covey, chief operating officer for U.S. operations, says Davey is committed to future growth—organically and through acquisitions. "We will continue to focus on high-quality companies with customer demographics that are similar to our own, within markets where we want to grow density," he says. "Our intent is always to choose talented, safety-conscious employees intent on providing high-level customer service." Cortese has offered many aspects of residential tree care to the Knoxville area for more than 35 years, including tree preservation, fertilization, consultation and diagnosis. Owner and Founder Jim Cortese says he chose Davey because he liked the additional career and arboricultural training opportunities Davey offered his employees. In a letter to his clients, Cortese stressed that, for them, many things would remain the same. "I know first-hand that Davey shares our values and our commitment to client satisfaction," Cortese says. "We will retain our highly skilled people, rely on the best science and use the best equipment available." "We are excited to welcome this company and its talented team into the Davey family," Covey says. "We have no doubt they will benefit from Davey's diversified service offerings, technology and equipment resources, research and development capability and, of course, the culture of employee ownership." The Council Connection U.S Congressman Dave Joyce (pictured left) and Davey Chairman, President and CEO Karl Warnke meet during an informational session The Davey Tree Expert Company and the Sustainable Urban Forests Coalition hosted in January. While touring the company's corporate office on Mantua Street in Kent, Ohio, Joyce met with Warnke, as well as Davey Institute Technical Advisor Anand Persad and Davey Institute Manager of Ecosystem Services Scott Maco. He also learned about some of Davey's and the Coalition members' urban forestry initiatives and the state of the urban forest in his district.
