14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2026 LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS HELP ENCOURAGE LEADERSHIP SKILLS At the Planting the SEED leadership development program in March, 17 leaders from Davey Tree Surgery Company's Western Operations group focused on three leadership priorities: Being a courageous leader, honing their craft and leading people. "The most valuable takeaway was the honest feedback and evaluation of strengths and weaknesses gathered from supervisors, peers, and direct reports," Nick Anderson, account manager, Oklahoma terri- tory, Davey Tree Surgery Company, said. "This provided clear insight into areas for personal growth and development as a leader, which I can apply directly when working with my team." This program, held at the SEED (Science, Employee Education and Development) Campus, had participants complete a leadership profile that measured key leadership competencies, assessed belief systems and assumptions and highlighted key development areas. Originally a three-and-a-half-day program, the Surgery leadership team did a two-day condensed program. "Davey consistently promotes personal growth, which ultimately strengthens professional performance," Anderson said. "Seeing leaders at multiple levels, including my own supervisors, participate in the same training demonstrated a strong commitment to development across the entire organization." In April, trainers encouraged over a dozen employees to find their training voices at the Arborist Skills Coach Mentor Module – Arborist Rigging Skills program at Camp Sequassen in Connecticut. This three-day training gave participants opportunities to practice coaching and mentoring others in all aspects of rigging skills. "I picked up a few new skills and was able to be refreshed on some things I already knew," Mason McClurg, trimmer trainee, Rochester office, Residential/Commercial services, said. "A big thing at this training was I learned new ways how to teach skills to my team, helping me become a better teacher and becoming more aware of what Davey expects from its leaders." McClurg said he found the training's section about skyline rigging, which is used for removing critical-risk trees, most beneficial since it was different than what he had worked with before. "The thing with tree work is there is always a way to level up your skills with training," McClurg said. "There will always be a bigger tree you need to work on or a bigger project you need to complete. It's great Davey offers trainings like this because people are able to be pushed past their comfort zone in a controlled setting while working with people they trust."
