DAVEY AROUND THE WORLD
GUSTAFSON GOES TO EUROPE
Luke Gustafson, sales arborist, South Baltimore office, traveled to
Oxford, England with his wife, parents-in-law, and two nephews to
attend a family friend's graduation, before traveling on to Lausanne,
Switzerland and the surrounding regions near the famed Lake Geneva.
Gustafson, who had previously traveled to many countries within Europe
and lived in Spain for a year, said it was exciting to take in the sites,
architecture, and natural beauty of Switzerland.
"I really enjoy traveling, and because I'm a tree and plant nerd, I also
really enjoy seeing how and what trees and plants grow around the
world," Gustafson said. "This trip was just another neat opportunity
to see the world and reconnect with a friend."
Thank you for taking us with you, Luke!
TREKKING MT. BALDY WITH SCOUT TROOP
Tom Hutchins, senior project manager, meeting and event support, corporate
communications, trekked to the peak of Mt. Baldy in New Mexico, located
within the Philmont Scout Ranch with ten other scout leaders, scouts, and a
staff ranger.
The group tackled the almost 100-mile hike by spending 10 days on the trails,
and two days at the basecamp at various altitude levels, all while carrying their
gear, shared tents, food, and other supplies on their backs.
This wasn't the first time Hutchins had climbed the mountain's terrain, as he
went for the first time as a 16-year-old scout in 1980. Since then, he has always
dreamed of going back and did so as a scout leader on his 60th birthday.
"It was a different experience going as a youth than as an adult," Hutchins
said. "You have a different understanding as an adult because you're seeing
and appreciating the history and the very nature of a place."

Heritage site on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
Tom Hutchins is pictured on the ninth day of the trip, 12,441
feet above sea level, at the peak of Mt. Baldy in his Davey
gear. One of his favorite memories of the trip included a
spontaneous hot dog cookout at the peak of the mountain,
served up by some of the ranch's staff members who climbed
the mountain dressed in chef hats and aprons to make them
for all those who made it to the top that day. "It felt like a
serendipitous end to a great day," Hutchins said.
