13 September/October 2023 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN STEWARDSHIP Albany office crew members Dan Barnes, foreman, Eric Roberts, trimmer, and Joseph Hollner, trimmer, recently spent their time doing volunteer work at the St. Mary's-St. Alphonsus Regional Catholic School in Glen Falls, New York. The work organized by Andy Cunniff, market manager, Northlands operating group, focused on completing hazardous tree pruning, raising tree canopies, and installing a cable for a tree that had a structural defect in and around the school's playground. ALBANY OFFICE VOLUNTEERS MAKE SCHOOL PLAYGROUND SAFER Crew members installed a cable and removed deadwood by climbing trees and using a lift bucket from their truck. Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company (WSSI) and Residential/Commercial (R/C) services employees from the North Virginia East and Mid-Atlantic Tree Preservation offices, volunteered by providing landscaping and yard work for five affordable Cornerstones housing units at a HomeAid National Capital Region Clean-up event co-organized by their partner Northern Virginia Building Industry Association. Located in Chantilly, Virginia, the nonprofit HomeAid National Capital Region is a chapter of HomeAid America. Davey and WSSI employees planted flowers, removed debris and helped with front and back yard work, while Davey donated all the mulch needed for the project. WSSI's Amy Connelly, director, and Jennifer Favela, senior environmental scientist, coordinated efforts with Rick Orwig, district manager, North Virginia East and Mid-Atlantic Tree Preservation offices, to bring R/C services and WSSI employees together for the event. "It was a great opportunity for Davey and WSSI to work together to lend a hand to the community," Favela said. "It was a very feel-good event that we all got to participate in." Orwig said, "We'll definitely do this again. We're currently looking for additional ways to give back because it helps build a personal relationship with the community, rather than a transactional one." WSSI AND R/C EMPLOYEES VOLUNTEER AT HOMEAID CLEAN-UP Pictured on the left among other HomeAid volunteers is Jennifer Favela, senior environmental scientist, Wetland Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey company (WSSI); and second from right, in the green shirt, is Edwin Garcia, trimmer, North Virginia East office. Davey clean-up event volunteers not pictured included David Booth, foreman, North Virginia East office; Amy Connelly, director, WSSI; Katherine Hull, environmental scientist, WSSI; Pat Norris, trimmer, North Virginia East office; Rick Orwig, district manager, North Virginia East and Mid-Atlantic Tree Preservation offices; Chris Reppert, sales arborist, North Virginia East office; Will Smith, sales arborist, North Virginia East office; and David Thurrott, sales and service coordinator, Mid-Atlantic Tree Preservation office. HomeAid National Capital Region aids those in the community who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness by partnering with the building industry to gain in-kind donations of labor and building materials. Barnes explained the work was done to make sure the children had a playground that was free of potentially hazardous and preventable safety issues that could arise from the surrounding trees. "It made me and the people I work with feel good," Barnes said. "We like doing all of our jobs, but when you get a chance to give back like this, it is extra rewarding."
