24 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2023 PERSEVERANCE EXPERTISE HARTNEY SPENDS DAY WITH POWERCORPS BOSTON TRAINEES All four Hartney Greymont, a Davey Company, offices supported an aerial rescue training day at the Mount Ida Campus of the University of Massachusetts (UMASS) Amherst for 30 trainees who are enrolled in PowerCorps Boston's workforce development program. PowerCorps Boston is a six-month program for Boston residents, ages 18-30, who are unemployed or underemployed, and are interested in gaining labor skills and certifications in preparation for green industry careers. Seventy employees attended from the Needham, Boston North Shore, Cape Cod, and Concord offices, along with arborist skills trainers Blake Duval, Jose Ramirez, and Emmett Shutts, supervisor; along with Matt Buza, regional safety specialist, health and safety department. They had a variety of training stations set up to meet the needs of a wide array of participants. Learning stations for participants included: • Two aerial lift scenarios with bucket trucks; one with a mannequin and one self-rescue. VINTAGE AD WINS NEW BUSINESS Michael Spaulding, district manager, Portland, Ore. office, received an interesting call for an appointment. "As we got to building a relationship on the site visit, I asked the client how she found Davey. She pulled out a vintage magazine from 1950 and said that she was reading old magazines from her mother's house she had stored away and found an ad of ours. So, she called to see if we were still in business," Spaulding said. The old ad the client found and her call to see if Davey was still caring for trees led directly to new business for Spaulding. "We trimmed her trees and fertilized them with Arbor Green PRO ® ," he said. Right: Client's copy of a 1950s Davey Tree Surgery Company ad. James Willey, assistant district manager, Needham office, coordinated the event, which included the Newton Fire Department and PowerCorps Boston. UMASS professor Kristina Bezanson played a key role in running the event with PowerCorps Boston. • Three climbing stations, each with varying degrees of difficulty, with mannequins in trees. • Plant identification. • First aid instruction. • Throwball challenge. • Newton Fire Department Q&A. • Fire department ladder truck rescue demonstration. "I was really proud of the way the whole group conducted themselves. It was a large site, so we were spread out over a large area. Everyone was mindful of the work, each other, and had a collaborative spirit," said Steve Kendall, district manager, Needham office.
