THE DAVEY BULLETIN
STEWARDSHIP
Original Rotary founder Paul Harris formed the Rotary Club
of Chicago in 1905. Today, the nonprofit Paul and Jean Harris'
Home Foundation is working to restore the home Paul and
his wife, Jean, lived in until 1947, located in the Ridge
Historic District on the south side of Chicago.
Brian Borkowicz, manager of national accounts, Davey
Business Development Team, worked to form a partnership
with the foundation for Davey to become the Paul Harris
home's official tree care company in 2021.
The Chicago office provides tree work at the property as
an in-kind donation. Rogelio Olvera, trimmer; Eloy Bandera,
trimmer; Alfonso Rojas, foreman; Ignacio Dominguez,
trimmer; and Julio Fonseca, trimmer, all worked at the
property. They removed six mulberry trees, two declining
spruce trees, two dead ash trees, and one declining maple
at the Paul Harris property.
In January 2023, Manny Aviles, sales arborist; Eddie
Fermoso, trimmer; Olvera; and Jose Ruiz,
PHC technician, pruned two oak trees
and five elm trees. Aviles is currently
working on a plant health care plan for
the property.
"There were many invasive trees on
this property, and we've cleaned up a lot
of those. The crews have done a great
job of improving the health of the trees,"
Aviles said.
In addition, Borkowicz is an advocate for becoming involved
with Rotary, and is a past president of the Elgin Rotary Club.
"I tell every district manager to get involved with Rotary
because it opens up a ton of doors for you. It's how I built
my whole office when I managed the Northwest Chicago
office. The Rotary's motto is service above self, which really
aligns with Davey's values," Borkowicz said.
