15 May/June 2022 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN 5: DRG ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING Jamestown Community College (JCC) was the first community college in New York to earn a Tree Campus Higher Education designation from the Arbor Day Foundation, with help from Lori Brockelbank, area manager, Davey Resource Group, (pictured fifth from left). Brockelbank works with the college yearly to help JCC maintain that recognition. JCC celebrated being a 13-year-recipient of the award by adding new trees to campus in honor of Arbor Day, including an Autumn Blaze maple, larch, Bloodgood London Planetree sycamore, Silver Queen silver maple, Turkish filbert, Cleveland Select pear, and a tulip tree. 2 1: WEST CLEVELAND OFFICE The West Cleveland office donated 500 white pine seedlings to the city of Strongsville, Ohio for their annual Arbor Day seedling giveaway. The seedlings were given to all second grade students in the community. Kid-friendly informational tags with a "Trees provided by Davey" message and QR codes to activity pages and tree planting tips were attached to the seedlings. In addition, the tags recognized Davey as a sponsor of Strongsville Rotary's Duck Race event to thank Davey for the seedling donation. 2: ST. LOUIS WEST OFFICE The city of Twin Oaks, Mo. celebrated Arbor Day with a tree planting event at Twin Oaks Park. Fourth grade Valley Park Elementary School students attended. Mark Grueber, community forester, Missouri Department of Conservation, talked to the students about the importance of trees and the various benefits trees provide to the community, and presented the city with a Tree City USA award. Mayor of Twin Oaks, Russ Fortune, was in attendance. Greg Wilson, sales arborist, St. Louis West office (bottom left), spoke about planting two swamp white oak trees at the correct width and depth. Eric Schlee, trimmer trainee (top, left), and Miguel Monita, landscape foreman, dug the holes. Jon Corzine, district manager, showed the students how to correctly place the soil around the root ball, and helped them complete that step. The students helped shovel in the soil. 4: DRG ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING SERVICES Held in North Park, the Fall River, Mass. inaugural Arbor Day celebration was supported by Davey, client National Grid, and other local agencies. The event featured tree plantings, seedling giveaways, food trucks, and more. Via a state grant, 500 tree seedlings were given away. DRG Environmental Consulting employees volunteered. Karl Grant, inventory arborist lead (pictured), performed tree climbing demonstrations. An avid birder, Matt Cembrola, inventory arborist technician, led birdwatching walks. Moriah Day, associate consultant, demonstrated planting practices and helped install two crabapples, a fastigiate ironwood, and one tulip tree. 4 6: KENT STATE UNIVERSITY EARTH FEST Kent State University celebrated Earth Day by holding an Earth Fest on April 19, aiming to increase students' awareness of sustainability and inspire their actions in the sustainability movement. Davey was one of many local organizations who supported the event, showcasing our commitment to environmental awareness and stewardship through innovative services and solutions. Andy Boateng, geospatial lead analyst, geospatial services support team, Davey Resource Group, 6 shared ideas on creating a carbon-neutral college town. Boateng explained to students that carbon neutrality is a goal emphasized in the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to levels that would limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. Meeting 2030 science-based targets by implementing high-impact actions such as grid decarbonization, a reduction in vehicle miles traveled, and improved commercial and residential building efficiency, will provide a path to the 2050 goal.
