14 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | May/June 2022 1: CLEVELAND EAST TERRITORY Cleveland Clinic Akron General hospital in Akron, Ohio, held an Earth Day celebration on April 22 in their courtyard with the theme "Invest in our Planet." The goal of the event was to raise awareness, promote volunteer opportunities, provide education about tree planting and caring for natural resources, as well as reusing, reducing, and recycling at Akron General and in the greater Akron community. During the event, the hospital also celebrated their recognition as a 2021 Tree Campus Healthcare facility by the Arbor Day Foundation. Davey employees Vanessa Potter, specialist, Commercial Landscape Services, and Megan Braden, recruiter, along with Cleveland East territory's Mike Dombrosky, branch manager, and Chris Jancsurak, project manager, handed out 50 saplings to hospital employees and community members. ARBOR DAY CLS 1: DRG UTILITY VEGETATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES AND SAN DIEGO OFFICE The city of Encinitas, Calif. celebrated the benefits of their urban forest and status as a Tree City USA community by hosting an Arbor Day event at Cottonwood Creek Park. City staff, Davey, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), and more volunteered for a tree planting event. Approximately 50 trees were planted. Volunteers from Davey Resource Group Utility Vegetation Management services included: Kevin Akers, project manager; Daron Dondero, account manager; Garrett Dyer, account manager, SDG&E; Tony Greene, UVM senior specialist (pictured), and Travis Nelson, UVM lead specialist. Dan Williams, project developer, Davey Resource Group, joined the cleanup event as well. This year's record for most trash collected was set by Alexi Weber. Weber and her husband cleaned up eight large bags! 3: EDMONSTON, MARYLAND YOUTH GROUP The youth group Defensoras de la Cuenca, a non-profit dedicated to helping the Latino community connect to their watersheds, organized an Arbor Day planting in Edmonston, Md. More than 100 volunteers participated from the community, and the mayor, Tracy Gant, gave a proclamation and joined community youth in the event. The volunteers planted trees along streets and in parks, including hackberry, river birch, sweetgum, paw paw, and sweetbay magnolia. Davey Resource Group's Ashley Satterfield, UVM technician, worked with Nathan McElroy, project manager, Pepco, making sure the correct trees were planted under power lines, including sweetbay magnolia, which grow 10 to 20 feet high. The electric lines are more than 10 feet above the maximum growth of the trees, with plenty of clearance at maturity. The taller trees, including sweetgum and hackberry, were planted away from the lines and buildings. It was a beautiful day spent celebrating community, sustainability, and watershed protection. Some of the group organizers requested further training in tree identification and planting, so Satterfield plans to volunteer with them in the future. 1 2 5 3 R/C 1
