ADDING MORE FORESTS AT SUMMIT METRO PARKS
Above: DRG and Summit Metro Parks are long-time partners.
Corine Peugh appreciates the client for understanding natural areas
and habitat management. Left: Variations in the planting layouts may be
studied to see if layout changes impact survival rates as trees mature.
Davey Resource Group (DRG) planted roughly 17,500 trees
for Summit Metro Parks as part of their Centennial Tree
Project to convert open park lands to forests. Summit Metro
Parks is celebrating its centennial by reforesting 100 acres.
Summit Metro Parks are located throughout Summit County
in Northeast Ohio. DRG was awarded three planting projects
by the Metro Parks. Two plantings occurred in fall 2021 at
Silver Creek Metro Park and Wood Hollow Metro Park. The
largest of the three plantings was completed in Spring 2022
at Tallmadge Meadows Park. 12,500 bareroot trees were
planted at Tallmadge Meadows Park. There are 35 different
tree species included as part of these plantings.
The most challenging part of the project was the logistics
behind planning large scale planting projects that were
spread over long periods of time, said Corine Peugh, senior
project manager, DRG, Environmental Consulting services. All
three projects also required deer protection installations on all
the trees, which required more time during the installations.
Peugh is grateful for the field crews and their ability to adapt
throughout this project.
"It takes a whole other level of logistics and coordination
to do a planting this big," Peugh said. "The crews on the
ground are the ones who are figuring out the most efficient
way to get the trees in the ground and working things out
on the fly."
To assist with the Tallmadge Meadows Park project, DRG
enlisted the help of the Cleveland West Commercial
Landscape Services territory. Cleveland West sent three
employees to provide extra personnel for the project.
"Davey is one team. When DRG calls us for help we always
try to send people to assist them," said Ed Yambor, account
manager, CLS. "It helps our branch and helps them meet
their contract deadlines."
With these plantings, Peugh hopes to have high survivability
rates at each planting site. All three sites will be monitored
this summer, and in the fall a survival count will be done to
determine if any trees need to be replanted.
