17 March/April 2021 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN Each year, the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) recognizes individual and team commitments to safety through the TCIA Safety Awards. In 2020, 3 Davey employees were recognized with TCIA Outstanding Individual Performance awards for their safety conscious actions while 3 other employees were recognized as Safety Standouts for performing their jobs safely and exceptionally well. These employees will receive either a plaque or certificate from TCIA recognizing their actions. DAVEY 2020 TREE CARE INDUSTRY SAFETY AWARD RECIPENTS CPR Saves Loved One Charles Blankenship, utility forester, DRG, rendered CPR to his grandmother until first responders arrived after finding her unresponsive and calling 911. Emergency personnel told him without CPR she would not have survived. "I'm thankful for the valuable skills Davey teaches us," Blankenship said. "You never know when you will have to use them. My family and I are eternally grateful." Hydroplane Crash Rescue Driving in heavy rain can be dangerous, and Doug Trice, motor carrier safety specialist, corporate safety department, knows that well. In March of 2020 he witnessed a vehicle hydroplane off the side of the road and come to rest on its side in a water-filled ditch. Trice approached the vehicle and assisted in helping the driver remove her seatbelt and exit to safety before water filled the interior. Trice assessed her for injuries and then stayed with the driver until emergency assistance arrived. Drowning Victim CPR Alex Brown, work planner, DRG, rendered CPR to a woman who had been pulled unconscious from Lake Michigan. and continued to do so until EMTs arrived and took her to the hospital. Sadly, she passed away a few days later. "I like to think that at least me giving her CPR gave her a chance to make it to the hospital and fight for her life," Brown said. "I'm very grateful for the CPR refresher course I got from Davey. It helped give me the confidence to give that woman aid." Burning Car Rescue David Balint, district manager, Wilmington office, was involved with a head-on collision while driving on company business. Another driver turned left in front of Balint while he was going through an intersection, causing the collision. Balint, secured safely by his seatbelt, was OK, but he realized the other vehicle was on fire. Acting quickly, he went to the other driver, who was disoriented, and helped him out and away before the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Brush Fire Assistance During a routine pole clearing project on the PG&E VC Southern account, Mark Noriega, vegetation technician, Davey Tree Surgery company, encountered a frantic homeowner who approached and asked for help controlling a fire on his property. Without hesitation, Noriega handed him his fire extinguisher before grabbing a shovel and McLeod to help extinguish the flames. The pair put the fire out before the local fire department arrived at the remote, high elevation property. Hit and Run Tracker When Justin Stone, UVM lead specialist, DRG, witnessed a hit and run while driving his Davey vehicle through Washington, D.C., he stepped in to help. Taking a shortcut around the block, Stone caught up with the culprit vehicle and got the license plate number. "I went back and gave the driver the plate and she thanked me. She and her kids weren't hurt, so that was good," Stone said. "She had temporary tags like I have on my personal vehicle, so I knew she was upset. I would want someone else to do the same for me."
