20 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2020 Thanks to an endowment established by the late Eugene Haupt, former president, Davey Tree Surgery Company, and his wife Betty, Kent State University at Salem will now offer scholarships that provide free tuition for first-year students seeking an associate degree in applied science in horticulture technology. The Eugene W. and Betty Haupt-The Davey Tree Expert Company endowment creates an opportunity for students interested in green industry careers and is expected to help strengthen and transform Kent State's horticulture program. "Davey is proud to be affiliated with these scholarships, which will be awarded in Gene and Betty's honor. Gene was a stalwart leader at Davey who helped shape a generation of managers and executives, but beyond that, he was a Gene Haupt After an unfortunate theft left the Royal Canadian Legion in Burlington, Ontario, without a Canadian flag, the Davey Burlington office was more than happy to help replace it. Not only did the thief remove the flag, they also took the rope used to raise and lower it. The pole stands at 12 meters high and the legion knew they needed a bucket truck to reinstall the hardware for the flag. Shawn Nixon, district manager, offered to bring a bucket truck over to the legion to assist them. While up in the bucket, Ryan Creary, climber, also helped repaint the sphere at the top of the flagpole in addition to helping replace the flag. The sphere had become rusted since it was last painted, but now it looks as good as new. "For us, it was an honor to help the legion," Nixon said. "They are a really great group of guys. We wanted to be there and support our community. I'm glad we could do our part to make a bad situation better." Top right: Ryan Creary, climber, repaints the sphere at the top of the flagpole. Haupt retired in 1990 following 52 years of service with Davey. He started in 1939, working his way up the ranks until he was named president of the Surgery Company in 1985. Kent State's horticulture degree includes concentrations in landscape design, turfgrass management and urban forestry. "This is a great opportunity for area students interested in careers in the green industry, thanks to the incredible generosity of Mr. Haupt," said Dr. David Dees, dean and chief administrative officer of the Kent State Columbiana County campuses. "His gift and financial support will strengthen and help transform our horticulture program, which will ultimately benefit our students, area communities and the companies that hire our graduates. We are sincerely grateful for Mr. Haupt's vision." LEADERSHIP
