22 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | September/October 2020 EDUCATING THE WORLD ON I-TREE Despite a global pandemic, Davey's i-Tree team from the Davey Institute has been making a global impact with a busy lineup of online presentations and events. 2020 I-TREE ACADEMY The 2020 i-Tree Academy was held online from January through May and featured seven, two-hour instructional modules designed to teach American and international students how to use i-Tree for community urban forest assessment projects or to train others to use i-Tree in their communities. Approximately 45 students participated in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) funded program, with Jason Henning, consulting urban forester, Krista Heinlen, natural resource specialist, Erika Teach, natural resource specialist, and Al Zelaya, urban forester, providing instruction. WILDLIFE HABITAT COUNCIL Zelaya also presented to the Wildlife Habitat Council, a Northwest Indiana group of local government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working on advancing community urban forestry initiatives. The presentation included findings on the environmental benefits from trees planted at the Ports of Indiana and public engagement maps. USFS AND DELHI URBAN NETWORK Zelaya also presented to the USFS International Programs and the Delhi Urban Network (DUN). The program showed ways that i-Tree could be applied in Delhi, India, to engage with schools and youth groups. Zelaya, Henning and Heinlen participated in another program with DUN, focused on adapting i-Tree for youth. The four part online program, titled "Shaping Future Stewards and Scientists," explored ways to integrate i-Tree-related urban forest concepts and ecosystem services such as pollution removal, storm water management, heat island reduction, climate change and more into youth learning. TREECONOMICS SERIES As part of the global Treeconomics Summer Series, Zelaya and Josh Behounek, business manager, Davey Resource Group (DRG), focused on using i-Tree's toolkits internationally during the 4-part series. Topics ranged from sustainable management practices in urban forestry and planting strategies, to using i-Tree to plan out urban forests and how people interact and benefit from trees in cities. DRG is partnering with the UK-based Treeconomics for webinars and distance projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. BAYARD ARBORETUM LONG ISLAND In March, Henning presented at Bayard Cutting Arboretum on Long Island, New York, as part of the Evolution of the American Landscape symposium. Henning had participants use MyTree, designed to be used on mobile devices for real-time analytics of tree benefits, to estimate the impact of trees in their neighborhoods to highlight temperature differences with expanded tree coverage. MERRITT COLLEGE AND USFS PACIFIC SOUTHWEST Teach gave two online i-Tree presentations focused on education. The first, at Merritt College's Urban Arboriculture Program, touched on using MyTree and i-Tree Eco to evaluate tree inventories, create baseline data and set future goals for the urban canopy. The second was conducted in collaboration with the USFS Pacific Southwest Research Station and Project Learning Tree. Designed for third and fourth grade students learning about the benefits of trees, Teach demonstrated how she became an urban forester, how to measure tree dimensions, how to identify a tree species and then use MyTree to determine the neighborhood benefits.
