7 January/February 2020 | THE DAVEY BULLETIN NOR'EASTER DISRUPTS POWER IN NEW ENGLAND A powerful nor'easter disrupted power for hundreds of thousands of New Englanders and prompted an emergency response from Davey crews on the National Grid account. Customers of National Grid in several states benefitted from Davey help, as more than 75 employees in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island worked to restore power. The storm affected more than 425,000 in the region with tropical storm-like winds and torrential rains in mid-October. Chris Bosch, area manager, Eastern Utility, said his team reaches out to Davey's corporate safety team whenever they are called to standby for a storm response. "They send us storm-related materials and tailgates for us to review with the crews. Any time we have a storm coming in like this we hold a tailgate meeting, sort of a safety stand-down, beforehand," Bosch said. "It's like a storm onboarding to remind the crews that this is storm work and to make sure we're doing everything the right way. They're reminded to use the all-stop if they have to, what their emergency contacts and utility contacts during the storm are. And we reiterate the importance of safety through the duration of the storm response." More than 50 employees responded in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Wes Moorhead, senior supervisor, Eastern Utility services, said 10 crews worked in western New York for almost two weeks on the immediate response and then patrolled circuits for further hazards. Included in Davey's storm response was one crew on the Eversource account. "There were some uprooting situations where the rain saturation accompanied by the high winds was a factor, but a lot of the tree damage was just limbs broken and snapped by the high winds," Moorhead said.
