34 THE DAVEY BULLETIN | November/December 2019 IN THE SPOTLIGHT Sage Culley, senior project manager, corporate communications, graduated from Leadership Portage County (LPC). Culley's LPC class spent numerous hours touring every corner of Portage County, Ohio. Each location provided an opportunity to meet with local leaders and hear their stories first-hand. Those same leaders exposed different views and challenged the class to have thoughtful discussions around difficult issues. "I was changed by my experience," Culley said. "LPC expanded my view of problems facing the county while strengthening my listening skills, broadening my empathy and perspective even further." Congrats Sage! Davey received a Historic Preservation Award from the Cuyahoga Falls Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for our care of the roughly 350-year-old Signal Tree located in the Summit Metro Parks. Last year, Davey adopted this tree to ensure it continues to receive proper arboriculture care, provided by the Akron R/C office, for the next five years. Sandra Reid, vice president, corporate communications and strategic planning administration, accepted the award on Davey's behalf. Congratulations! Arborguard Tree Specialists, Atlanta office, was ranked as one of Atlanta's Top 20 Commercial Landscape Companies in 2018 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. According to the article, all the companies listed get 50 percent or more of their Atlanta business from "employing workers who perform professional installation and maintenance of landscape services to Atlanta commercial real estate clientele." Arborguard was ranked 19th and the companies were ranked based on their annual revenue. Congratulations Arborguard Atlanta! Brenda Hartle, landscape foreman, Cincinnati territory, was elected as vice president of Friends of the Boone County Arboretum, a not-for-profit created to support and promote the Arboretum as a living museum. The arboretum is in Union, Kentucky. For the past three years, Hartle has been voluntarily designing and installing the front bed, pictured, for Friends of the Boone County Arboretum. "I love this arboretum and it holds a place in my heart," Hartle said. "I work a lot of hours for Davey Tree. But if I have any spare time, I usually will spend it volunteering at the arboretum doing something horticulture related." Congratulations, Brenda! The Davey Tree Surgery Company received the Safety Innovator award at Southern California Edison's 2019 Supplier Recognition Dinner, themed "Elevating Safety." Davey's Factors and Forces program was recognized as an industry leading and innovative solution to improving tree worker safety. The award was presented by Andrew Martinez, SCE vice president of safety, security and business resiliency.
